My love of horses deeply influenced my art. I was 1 here and this was my first time on a horse. I cried when they brought me down.

This was at my grandfather’s ranch in Montana. I spent my summers with my grandparents in Billings. My grandfather or Pop Pop was a strong influence on my life as well as my grandmother.

We would spend days sculpting with grandma or painting with Pop Pop. Before he retired, I would hide under his desk at the architect firm and draw while he worked. He would take us to building sites and we would walk through grand buildings he designed.

When we weren’t there, we were in the saddle on the plains and climbing rimrocks, as I took photos. Leave only footprints and take only photos I was taught. Although we did go berry picking and help grandma make jams and jellies.

My first art was horses, cows, and the old west. Painting the horses as they rested in the shade. Whenever my grandfather was proud of me it was the best feeling in the world because I thought he hung the moon. When I took trails grown men shied away from, he was so proud. He taught me to be brave and the Cowboy code if it’s not right, don’t do it. If it’s not yours, don’t take it. If it’s not true, don’t say it. And yet had a keen sense of humor and for someone who was a genius he could be humble and laugh at himself.

Painting horses took me from the old west to further in history, to Native Americans, to Medieval knights, horses have always been there beside us. And to this day, they are still my favorite to draw or paint and no reference necessary.
