For some, hydrangeas have been labeled as challenging flowers when it comes to watercolor. So when I sketched the design for Thursday’s workshop at Keepin’ It Local, I worried that I had inadvertently set us up for failure. But you all proved me wrong - your peony and hydrangea bouquets looked amazing! Even better than I imagined when I I initially sketched them. I enjoyed guiding the group through color mixing, layering, adding accents and more. I hope you all enjoy your paintings as much as I do - and that your moms do too!

One of the amazing paintings from last nights workshop at Keepin’ It Local! I love seeing you all bring my designs to life! 🫶

Last night was a first for me using water color. I signed up for a a class with Tiffany Kildale Designs. I had a lot of fun but boy was I intimidated by this medium. Water color is a one and done unlike oil and acrylic. I’m glad I did this class. Here is my finished piece. Now to get my own pallet and find the time to practice this technique.

You know that feeling when you finally take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and unclench your jaw? That’s how yesterday’s workshop at Corteau Vineyards with Katie Brinkley Studio felt for me - it was so joyful and relaxed. We had a really fantastic group that just felt easy. Over half the group attended previous workshops of mine, so maybe that’s why! I loved hearing you all share how excited you are to gift your paintings to your moms for Mother’s Day. 🥰

I’m looking forward to sharing this same feeling with my workshop on Thursday at Keepin’ It Local! We’re painting peonies and hydrangeas, and each painter will leave with an 8x10, matted, ready-to-frame original watercolor painting. Perfect for gifting… or keeping (I promise I won’t tell!)

“Wait - watercolor is fire!”

That’s a direct quote from one of the 8th graders I got to spend the morning with, while I volunteered to coach a local middle school class with watercolor techniques, and help them prepare for their end-of-year project. We walked through painting watercolor landscapes and while I think their paintings are wonderful, they are absolutely their own worst critics. The hardest thing you can do is keep pushing yourself to complete something you don’t think you’re good at, but that’s exactly what they did and the results were fantastic! I had a blast and was so impressed with all their artwork. I can only hope they had as much fun as I did, and that maybe they remember that watercolor can in fact, be fire. 😂🔥
