Every time I make a new self portrait it feels a bit like taking a personal inventory. I look at the last one I made and establish what’s changed, and what hasn’t. I feel like since my last one I have really clarified my determinations and brought myself into focus. I am proud of how far I have come.

Anyways, here’s to paying attention, looking closely, and listening to what the wind whispers in your ear.

Life update:

I am —in fact— alive, and doing pretty great even though I’m really tired while navigating work and school. Nonetheless I feel good, fulfilled.

I’ve been working with teens leading art activities and teaching about techniques, and they are definitely keeping me on my toes. I wouldn’t have it any other way though. I’ve been writing a lot more lately and slowing down my process more.

Been so deep in “getting my work out there” that I forgot why I actually like making it — mostly because I take myself way too seriously, and honestly, I’m tired. So this is my petty little correction: a 4”x4” oil painting, its own tiny name tag, and a copper-and-yarn rope like it’s hanging in the Louvre instead of on my desk.

“Airpod Skulls” — oil on panel, NFS (because it’s staying right here, roped off, exactly like this).

Sacredness as I know it.

A reinterpretation of the praying hands motif — Suggestive oil impasto, textured and expressive. The subject is centuries old and instantly recognizable as devotional. The nails are not. That collision is the point: queerness held in the same visual language usually reserved for the sacred, because it belongs there too.

I’ve been daydreaming about turquoise. Not just the stone itself, but the idea of it being a combination of earth and water. I don’t often paint from imagination or without references so this piece feels particularly special.

If you mention my robe sleeve during pride month; It’s a hate crime.

I have officially published my first fundraiser: Maíz y Maguey. This fundraiser supports my goal to develop and adapt indigenous paper-making practices with other accessible indigenous materials. Allowing cross-cultural collaboration between tribal communities of Mexico Canada and the U.S.
