With the passing of the singer-songwriter and guitarist Joe Ely in December of 2025, we wanted to do something special to honor his legacy and the impact he had on music and on Lubbock and many Lubbock origin musicians. We felt like he also had much to continue teaching young musicians through his collaborations, musicianship and simply being a good friend.

Born in Amarillo in 1947, Ely would find his musical voice in Lubbock. He co-founded the Flatlanders with the great Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. He played at the famous Cotton Club in Lubbock and of course, Stubbs Bar B Que. He later went on to bigger stages all over the world. He was an icon and a one of a kind. His genre was hard to pin down, as he blended country, rock and blues and the energy he presented on the stage was legendary.

We weren't sure what honoring such an incredible musician would look like until the idea of a blog series occurred. Weaving his tale and telling his story through the eyes of his friends, fellow musicians, collaborators and fans. These will reside on the LCAF website and be a way of capturing some of the stories and memories from people who knew him. We hope you enjoy them as we release them over the next year (yes, there are a lot of wonderful people who he impacted). We'll post here as they are released.

Deep gratitude to Music Advisory Committee Member Chuck Luck and Spring Commercial Music Student Abi Avitia who worked hours on this very special project and interviewed key people in Ely's life.

The Llano Estacado Clay Guild is proud to present the 29th Annual Wine & Clay Festival, taking place this Saturday, June 6 (11 a.m.–5 p.m.) and Sunday, June 7 (Noon–5 p.m.) at Llano Estacado Winery, 3426 FM 1585, Lubbock, TX 79404. Admission is free, making it the perfect opportunity to enjoy a weekend of art, wine, and culture.

For nearly three decades, this beloved event has brought together artists, collectors, and wine lovers for a unique weekend celebrating creativity. While pottery remains at the heart of the festival, visitors will also find a wide variety of artwork from regional artists working in many different media.

For $25, visitors can purchase a commemorative Wine & Clay Riedel stemless wine glass and receive three tickets for wine tastings to enjoy while exploring the festival. Wine will also be available for purchase throughout the weekend by the glass and bottle.

Browse hundreds of handmade pieces, watch demonstrations of wheel throwing and hand-building techniques, meet local artists, and enjoy the distinctive atmosphere of the winery surrounded by aging barrels and tanks.

The Llano Estacado Clay Guild is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting education, participation, and appreciation of clay arts. Throughout the year, the guild provides workshops, scholarships, public demonstrations, and opportunities for artists to exhibit and sell their work. Wine & Clay is their largest annual fundraiser and showcase.
