Being a great gigging musician isn’t just about knowing your instrument. It’s about being able to listen, adapt and jump in when the music takes an unexpected turn.

Join us at Jake's Sports Cafe & Backroom for Getting the Gig and we’ll take you behind the scenes with a live demo and walk-through of improvisation led by Jonny Hughes —showing how musicians listen to what’s happening, find their place, and confidently play with musicians and groups you may not know. He'll take you through the process along with other amazing players.

Because “sitting in” isn’t just about getting on stage. It’s about being flexible enough to play with a variety of groups, styles and situations—and that flexibility can make all the difference when you’re building a career as a working musician.

But, you have to be there - register today: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/6th-annual-getting-the-gig-tickets-1998272128729 or visit lubbockculturalarts.org.

We’ll be there! Hope to see you there too!

A terrific ‘Arts After Hours’ with the one and only Pat Maines Nashwell.Cafe . We had a GREAT conversation about collaboration- how to make it happen and why it’s so critical for an arts ecosystem. Watch our social for more opportunities to connect and be a part of the conversation.

Check out our next blog in our Joe Ely series as we share reflections by some of the friends who ran the venues and events that hosted Joe and his band. We loved hearing the great stories about these legendary Lubbock spaces in which this icon played and hope you do too!

Big thanks to Charles Chuck Luck and Abi Avitia for their work in conducting these interviews. Thanks also to Bruce Jaggers, Steve Moss and Roy Pierce for sharing their memories.

The West Texas Watercolor Society has their show up currently at the Buddy Holly Center . Don't miss this amazing display of locally based artists' work. Pictured are: Chromatic Daydream by Gary Johnson, Los Ojos Hollies by Dyan Newton and The Private Space of Miss Bokhayn by Claudia Gammill.

Going by to see the show and even better, purchasing that next favorite piece for your collection is a wonderful way to support local artists. The show is up into September and available to see during the Center's normal business hours.
