Our approach for Fire Station 33 was to activate the site and signify the exemplary service of fire fighters in a single free-standing sculpture. The first thing that comes to mind for us when thinking about a fire-fighter is the word "Protect", so that word is viewed from one direction. Two other perspectives shows the silhouette of a fire-fighter approaching their call to action. The final side (opposite “Protect) is an abstraction, symbolic of the unknowns that fire fighters face. Placed on a large sandstone base to set it off from the landscape, the 6-foot tall, iconic sculpture is fabricated from stainless steel, with one side painted in durable epoxy paint to tie into the building's aesthetic. To have the word Protect in fire engine red strengthens what this word means to those in service and the community it serves.

CALL FOR ENTRY - BENSON SCULPTURE GARDEN!!

Submission and Selection Process For New Additions to Benson Sculpture Collection is now open!

The Loveland High Plains Arts Council (LHPAC) is pleased to announce an online Call for Entry for new additions to Benson Sculpture Garden. Located in Loveland, Colorado, the 10-acre park provides a beautiful and unique outdoor setting for showcasing sculpture since 1985. Currently, there are 178 pieces of sculpture by world-renowned artists on permanent display. The collection is worth over $5 million.

We are looking for life-size or larger pieces (5 feet or more) to add to the collection in Benson Sculpture Garden. We are also wanting to expand the scope of artists included in the park. With the expansion of the park in recent years, we are motivated to find new and unique pieces that add to the diversity of this world-renowned sculpture garden.

While we are always accepting submissions for bronze pieces, we will also consider stone and metal pieces that are able to withstand the year-round weather conditions in Colorado as well as the many, unsupervised children who climb on and play with the sculpture.

For much more detail and information for submitting a piece for consideration....please click on this link:
https://www.sculptureinthepark.org/call-for-entry-1

***October 31, 2022 is the deadline for submitting your proposals.

Congratulations Jane DeDecker! Winner of a History Colorado's 2022 Miles Bancroft Award for her Estes Park Women’s Monument!

These awards highlight outstanding projects throughout the state that further the understanding of Colorado history in exemplary and unique ways.

“Thanks to all involved for completing the Estes Park Women's Monument project. This was a community wide project that honors all Estes Park Women from the past to the present. The artist Jane DeDecker is awesome. She created 12 amazing sculptures for this monument that represent 12 real women of Estes Park. These sculptures are now installed in a new downtown park, called the Women's Heritage Plaza. Great work everyone!” -Project Lead, Ron Wilcox

It saddens us to share that Carol Gold passed away August 18, 2022. Her daughter's words embody the loss we all feel, "The hole she has left is huge." This is true for us on a personal level, as much as it is, a loss to the art community at large.

Over the past thirty years, Fairfax, California artist, Carol Gold's work has been widely exhibited in the U.S. and Canada. Her sculpture has received numerous accolades at national exhibitions including the John Cavanaugh Memorial Award from the National Sculpture Society and multiple feature articles in renowned publications.

Carol has been a fellow with the National Sculptors' Guild since 1996. With our design team, the prolific sculptor placed hundreds of smaller works and dozens of public art commissions. Each monumental placement promote a sense of pride and community cohesion where they were installed.

Infinite Dance is perhaps the closest to a self-portrait of the monuments - depicting a figure dancing joyfully on the top of a stainless steel ring. Carol was both a serious and studious person, she stayed current with politics and social issues, but that glint in her eye as she looks up at you (for most of us) showed her wisdom about the balance of life; to sometimes set all that aside and move to the music.

We are so grateful for the time we have known and worked with Carol Gold to share her creative energy and vision; her artistic legacy will contribute to generations to come. - Alyson and John Kinkade, National Sculptors' Guild

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations are made in Carol’s honor to Democracy Now! KPFA, The Sierra Club, the Marin Land Trust or Planned Parenthood. We've added links to each on the blog post.

Have you seen the newest additions to Benson Sculpture Garden??? 3 of the 6 are by NSG members. We love ALL the public art in Loveland! The art community is why we have our headquarters here.

Posted • On Saturday, July 9, the Loveland High Plains Arts Council (LHPAC) dedicated six new donations in the Benson Sculpture Gardens.

Art in Public Places is very grateful to LHPAC’s for the generous gift of these outstanding sculptures to the City’s public art collection. Several of the sculptors were present to share the inspiration for their artwork and answer questions from the public.

Congratulations to the following sculptors whose work was honored on this day: Abracadabra by Craig Campbell, On a Roll by Jack Hill, Hangin’ Around by Mark Hopkins, Power of Thought by Victor Issa, Monarch Girl by Joe Norman and Open Window by Ted Schaal.

Please be sure to visit the gardens to view these new artworks on permanent display.

Gary Alsum has finished the clay enlargement and the Gene Bess Monument is on its way through the casting process. He'll be ready to greet students and alumni at Three Rivers College in a few months.

Coach Bess became college basketball’s all-time wins leader in 2001 when he surpassed North Carolina’s Dean Smith and Richard Baldwin of Broome Community College. He was the first college basketball coach to reach 1,000 wins in 2006, the first with 1,100 wins four seasons later, and 1,200 in 2015. His 1,300th win came in what ended up being his final home game on a court named in his honor. Coach Bess finished with a career record of 1,300-416, won national championships in 1979 and 1992, coached in four national title games, appeared in 17 national tournaments, won 23 region championships, and is a member of four halls of fame.

Last fall, National Sculptors' Guild Fellow Gary Alsum was selected to sculpt beloved basketball coach, Gene Bess, for placement by the college in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. The sculpture will be located on the entry plaza of the Libla Family Sports Center.

Craig Campbell’s “Abracadabra” is installed in its new home of Little Rock, Arkansas. Sculpture at the River Market commissioned this magical piece from us a year ago. And we just love how it turned out, right down to the colorful patina.

This sculpture depicts an aspiring Magician whimsically practicing his tricks for the attentive audience of a dog, a mouse, and a stuffed bunny. My inspiration in creating Abracadabra is as a reminder that there is a power greater than us all and it is important to look for the “magic” in everything.
