Posted • “‘Strength of the Maker’ right from its title to the strength shown even in the toes is a statement of how I view my very inner belief. Nature and all things natural have always been of the utmost importance to me all my life. Believing in a God, the Great Spirit, Buddha, Mohammed, the Mysterious One, and other beings of greatness is important. I feel they all exude the same message: a life of oneness, love, honesty, and a source of emotional strength. ‘Strength of the Maker’ is my visual version of how I see my Maker.” - Denny Heskew

Denny Haskew, a member of the Potawatomi citizen nation, is known for creating art that reflects Native American and Southwestern culture. His work has been described as intensely personal and honest, reflecting recurring themes of spirit, love, forgiveness, healing, endurance, and strength.

Haskew recalled visiting the inaugural Sculpture in the Park Show and Sale in 1984.

“My mom knew that I was messing around with wood carving and stuff, and so I came, and I saw sculpture for the first time with that show,” he said. “It was a lightbulb going off in your head. This is what I should do, and I stayed. I never went back.”

Undeterred by his lack of formal training, Haskew dedicated a year to apprenticeship. His determination paid off when he entered five pieces in the next Sculpture in the Park Show and Sale, using the earnings to expand his portfolio further. Denny is a charter member of the National Sculptors’ Guild.

The installation of his “Strength of the Maker” on the grounds of the Benson Sculpture Garden honors the beginning of his career and a life of oneness, love, honesty, and emotional strength.

We love that Shippers' Supply is packing our Ice Skaters to head back home with some beefed up security measures made by Bronze Services. We know they’ve been missed from the Paramount Pond, and happy they will be installed in time for the city’s lighting ceremony. We look forward to sharing pics once reinstalled.

Sculptures pictured are from Dee Clements ice skating series. Please contact us if you’d like a set for your public art collection.

CALL TO ARTISTS!!!
Outdoor Sculpture Purchase for Benson Sculpture Garden!

Loveland High Plains Arts Council is ready to purchase life-size or larger outdoor sculptures to add to the collection in Benson Sculpture Garden.

While we always accept submissions for bronze pieces, we also consider stone, metal, or other durable, permanent materials that are safe, easily maintained, and that can withstand the year-round weather conditions in Colorado as well as the many unsupervised children who climb on and play with the sculpture.

For future maintenance and repair reasons, pieces produced by reputable and well-established US facilities are preferred with the understanding that a three-year warranty on workmanship, durability, and materials is expected from the artist.

All sculptures in the garden collection are professionally inspected, cleaned, and maintained annually by the LHPAC and the City of Loveland’s Visual Arts Commission.

Important Dates:

· November 18, 2024
The deadline for submitting proposals is 3 images per piece.

· December 31, 2024
Final selection of new pieces by the Loveland High Plains Arts Council

· February 6, 2025
Final approval by the City of Loveland’s Visual Arts Commission

·July, 2025
Installation of new pieces in Benson Sculpture Garden

Application Requirements:

Submissions must be submitted via Café Call for Entry website at https://artist.callforentry.org by 12:00 pm MDT on Monday, November 18, 2024

- A 1–2-page (maximum) resume listing the artist’s education, experience, awards, commissions, collections, and galleries.

- An artist may submit up to 3 different pieces of work. Please fill out a separate entry/application for each piece proposed.

- 3 images of each proposed piece showing the front, back and side view. The artist’s picture or name must not appear anywhere in the image.

- Please do not submit pieces that you have submitted more than once in previous years or that are duplicated in a permanent, public location within a 60-mile radius of Loveland, CO.

Eligibility Criteria
Open to all sculptors age 18 and older working in a permanent medium suitable for outdoor installation.

A great local article on the project we previously posted. Jane DeDecker is bringing the art community together to help young people facing housing insecurity. You can’t imagine what a drawing kit of one’s own can unleash in a young creative.

Please consider donating those art books that have served you and ready to inspire the next generation. Think about what art supplies you used in high school and provide some tools.

Site work for the Armed Forces Memorial commissioned by the City of Paramount has been underway by our team in California, Advanced Aquatics. They have done a superb job forming and pouring the 15-ft diameter foundation for the granite seals to lay on. Meanwhile, Clark Memorials in Alabama has completed the bronze elements.

This memorial has involved individuals and companies from across the nation; Colorado, Washington, Alabama, and California; how fitting for a space that honors those who serve and remembers those who sacrificed all for our country.
