I don’t post a lot about what I do with my time, so I thought I’d give you a sample of one aspect of my retired life: fly tying.
I’m an avid fly fisherman, as well as an avid fly-tier. I started fly tying way back in the early ‘90s and have developed it as an extension of my passion for fly fishing.
I’ve had the good fortune to fish on the rivers of Alaska for Salmon, in the Caribbean and Florida Keys for Bone Fish and Tarpon, as well as lots of trout fishing in Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. A few years back, Brenda and I even went on a service project to build a modest home for a family in the Guatemalan countryside and tacked on a couple of days fishing for Sailfish on the Pacific Coast.
For all of those trips, I did the fishing research and tied all the flies. It’s a marvelous avocation. I tie a lot for our Etsy business, Fly Fishing Extras (Etsy.com/shop/flyfishingextras) and have tied custom orders for customers in Australia, Europe, and even Japan.
The pictures below are just some samples. The picture on the far left is a palette of midges for Trout. None of them is bigger than about half the width of the nail on your little finger. The picture on the top right is a new pattern squid pattern I’ve designed for an upcoming trip to San Diego where I hope to get out and fly fish for some Bluefin Tuna and Mahi-Mahi. The picture on the bottom right is a tube fly I designed for fly fishing for Sailfish and Marlin.
I know it’s a pretty niche art form, but get a lot of pleasure out of tying these flies and enjoy sharing them with customers and other fly-tiers!

If you’re going to be fishing for sailfish, we have the pattern for you! This is Doug’s Sailor, a tube fly with the color and action to entice the big hits! Tied with a #10-15 Fish Mask that allows for a big Living Eye for sailfish to lock in on. The pattern uses a feature Doug calls a “skid plate” to displace water and hold the fly just below the surface. The Sailor can be trolled or cast quickly when a sailfish has followed a teaser up close to the stern of the boat.

Another order shipping out. This is an order of Bow Busters articulated streamers with a #6 TMC 200R hook on a 35mm shank. The hook and shank are dressed with a mylar under wrap, barred Oliver’s and white mink zonker strips, a Flashabou lateral line and a #6 Fish Mask with Living Eyes. And, as a complimentary fly, we’ve included a #10 Atomic Egg!
Each order comes with a complimentary fly and personalized letter describing the patterns and how best to fish them!

It’s a good time to fish for billfish and Doug is sending out another order of Sailors. Sailors are Doug’s unique tube fly he designed for a trip to Guatemala several years ago. Since that trip, he’s sold dozens on Brenda and his Etsy shop, Fly Fishing Extras (Etsy.com/shop/flyfishingextras).
This is a unique pattern because rather than using a conventional popper head, it has a #10-15 Fish Mask fitted with what Douglas calls a “skid plate” that acts to displace water and give the tube fly action while holding it just below the surface!
It’s a hot ticket for Sailfish, Marlin and even Mahi-Mahi!
At the bottom of the page is a new pattern Doug has designed for Bluefin Tuna, he’ll be fieldtesting it in the deep waters off Southern California later this spring!

Greetings Fly Fishing Friends!
I’m getting ready for a trip to Southern California to fish the deep water for Mahi-Mahi and Bluefin Tuna.
This is a squid pattern I’ve designed for the trip (I call it the MMT Squid. I have it tied in a variety of colors - mostly natural colors but some fluorescents as well). It has Silly Leg tentacles, UV Polar Chenille, a number 8.5 Fish Mask with 3D 13mm eyes two natural barred Zonker strips and an Alask cone head. The hook is a Gamakatsu SL12S connected with a piece of 50lbs mono to a 35mm shank.
