It's always fun when photo albums come in the shop. This one starts with a two month summer camp for boys back in 1915. Among other things we know they boxed and sailed and slept in tents.
The boy and his cat were named Arthur and Queenie dated 1939.
Superman sightings were common back then.
Not sure what the big ball was all about. (just learned the big ball is for motorbike trick riding)

Joni Mitchell fans!
I’ve had this 1974 book “For the Roses” for probably 30 years. The glued binding has deteriorated, the pages are loose so I framed the iconic photo of Joni on the rocks. (Photo was also used in the inside of the album) The book is filled with lyrics, music, photos and artwork by Joni Mitchell. $60 for everything, book and framed pic.

New face at Dickens Alley.
This beautiful authentic Iroquois mask came in the shop the other day. I did a little searching and found this info at the on-line Encyclopedia Britannica.
“Masks have played an important part in magico-religious rites to prevent and to cure disease. In some cultures, the masked members of secret societies could drive disease demons from entire villages.
“Among the best known of these groups was the False Face Society of the Iroquois people. These professional healers performed violent pantomimes to exorcise the dreaded gahadogoka gogosa (demons who plagued the Iroquois). They wore grimacing, twisted masks, often with long wigs of horsehair. Metallic inserts often were used around the eyes to catch the light of the campfire and the moon and to prevent surprise attacks from invisible evil forces.”

This old 1888 edition of Oliver Twist has an intricate cover design. It would be nice to have a watercolorist turn the cover into a beautiful work of art. There is also a cool bookplate from a private library. I love the things I come across in my business.

Looks like all the guys got paid 80 cents per day except for Mr. B.M. Bracket Sr. who made $1.25 per day. I’ll bet they worked pretty hard for their wages.

Publisher: London: Virtue & Co. engraved titles: New York: [1875-76] 2 Volumes. folio. engraved frontis portrait, & 43 engraved plates by C.W.Sharp, W.M.Lizars, C.Cousen & others after W.Q.Orchardson, A.Hughes, R.Dadd, D.Maclise, &c., with tissue guards. Original gilt edges. This is a very large and heavy two volume set. Each volume measures 11” x 15” x 3 ½”. Very sturdy with foxing throughout. Steel engravings are beautiful.

New in the store this beautiful volume of the Historical Plays of William Shakespeare. Not dated but published sometime between 1865 – 1880. This profusely illustrated large book measures 10” x 13”. Full leather cover is scuffed and some foxing inside but very sturdy. All in all pretty good condition for its 150 years.

I found this excellent little hand painted design inside an envelope, it looked like the lining of the envelope, I doubt the receiver of the letter knew that this was separate. This was found in a scrapbook from 1939. The scrapbook documented someone’s cruise through the Caribbean, leaving from New Orleans.
They stopped in Cuba and got this card from The Havana Club. I guess you can’t visit Cuba without sampling the rum. Apparently Havana Club Rum is still available, you’ll have to get you a bottle and try the recipe provided.
“Tradition states that when opening a bottle of Havana Club you should pour the first drops on the floor "for the saints" and when toasting the party you should say 'salud, por que la belleza sobra' which translates as "to your health, since you're already so beautiful".

Sharing some fascinating tintypes that my friend Connor educated me about. These are called “Hidden Father” photos and there are also “Hidden Mother” photos as well. The effect is so mysterious and also rather sinister with the dark figure in the background.

I had some VIPs in the store today. My nephew Will and his girlfriend Kat are out for some skiing. Will will be a doctor next year and Kat is an art teacher. They both live in Rochester NY.

I see that Scott Freeman has been busy as usual on Valentine’s Day. The new community art project is on display at 4th and Lincoln. Each year Scott has a huge wall mural designed that individuals can help with by each painting one small square. They don’t know what the finished piece will look like. No one else does either except Scott. He assembles all the numbered pieces on the wall and Voilà. This year its Loveland’s version of Edvard Munch’s, The Scream. Come on downtown and see it.
