Take Off! This Barrows Golden Eye was dragging its "toes" as it took off here in Jackson Hole.
Morning has Broken: It took a bit of climbing to get above the low morning fog, but it was worth it! Hard to beat the Tetons with snow on them!
Owls are always high on people's "bucket list" when they come to Jackson Hole, but unfortunately they are quite difficult to find (unless someone else saw them fly and is photographing them). Great Gray Owls and Great Horned Owls are the most common species here, but we occasionally hear of someone seeing a Pygmy Owl or Saw-whet Owl. Both are very small. This Great Gray Owl posed for me after a long search along the river bottoms.
The Fall Rut: Bulls court the cows during September, just in time for the foliage season.
Labor Day is over, so it officially Fall here in the Tetons! Like many, it is my favorite time of the year. Leaves are changing. Animals are active. The saturated light from the smoke and haze makes many photos even better.

The smoke and haze can create spectacular colors for sunrise and sunset here in Jackson Hole. In reality, there isn't much we can do about the conditions, so I go out with an open mind and look for ways of capitalizing on the offerings.

Wyoming is the least populated state in the country. Jackson Hole is located in the northwest corner of the state helping with its "dark sky" designation. Without all of the night light pollution, the milky way is always stunning. This was taken on a calm night here in Grand Teton National Park. Today's digital cameras bring out details our eyes can't see! I love it here! MJ

You may have heard about the NEOWISE Comet last summer. With our "dark skies" here in Jackson Hole, I was able to capture it clearly as it crossed over the Grand Teton Range. I'll make this image available at www.tetonimages.com on beautiful metal prints.
Like much of the West, Jackon Hole had haze and smoke during much of the summer. That's the bad news, but the haze created some wonderfully colorful photos, especially in the mornings and evenings.
Most of the hibernating mammals have emerged from their dens. These Yellow-bellied Marmots are out, gathering grass and acting frisky. Grand Teton National Park is closed to all visitors and locals, but locals are allowed to more around the valley some as long as they practice safe social distance guidelines. Teton County is asking tourists to stay away (and don't bring additional virus transfers to the area) until further notice. Mountain Goats are some my favorite wildlife subjects. I am always amazed at their dexterity as they move across steep mountainsides. During the winter months, their thick coats are long and flowing. Alpenglow over the Grand: I love this time of the morning! It takes getting up long before most other people, but it's usually worth the loss of sleep and early morning drive. This photo was taken at the iconic Snake River Overlook in Grand Teton National Park. Check out www.bestofthetetons.com for more photos and local photography information!
This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago at 6:30 am. . That was after I stayed out until after 11:30 pm the night before, hoping for a shot. The low light conditions and long exposure gave it a painterly appearance. Definitely the moody lighting adds to the capture. The Mountain Lion was visible for about 5 days, before disappearing again.

Driving Rain: Shoshone is my favorite Moose in Grand Teton National Park over the past few years. I photographed him the day before as he was stripping his velvet covered antlers. On the day of this photo, I was wearing waders and a waterproof jacket. Thankfully, I also had an umbrella with me to protect my camera gear. I photographed Shoshone for 15-20 minutes during the rain storm, then another half hour after the rain moved on. I have thousands of photos of Shoshone, but the rain streaks make this one so unique. I was lucky to have been in the right place at the right time that day! He was laser focused on a fly fisherman in the nearby river.

Moose are such wonderful creatures! Luckily, I live in an area of the country where Moose are common. I spend much of my time from mid-August to late December photographing them. Currently, Shoshone is my favorite!
