Lundeen Sculpture Creating original, life-like bronze sculptures from our Loveland, Colorado studio.

If you have seen the Stations of the Cross located in Gretna, Nebraska, you may notice this second set has a little different patina. (The patina is the color we add to the bronze as one of the last steps.) This patina is a bit darker, meant to show off the golden details in high contrast.

What do you think of the job our crew did finishing this one up?

Recently, a librarian from Avon, Colorado reached out to our studio to ask for more information on some of the sculptures they have in their town.

One of them was "The Classics", sculpted by George back in 1994. The story of how "The Classics" was created was so charming, I thought you might want to hear it too. From George:

"The Classics is a simple composition, with two children (my daughter Annalise and son Warner), and a young man named Danny, reading to them. Danny was a young man, born with Downs Syndrome, who walked by my studio most days. A library commissioned me to make a piece for them so this is what I came up with. My kids, while modeling, were always moving, making it difficult to catch them in just the right position. Danny, however, would come in , take the pose and would not make a move until I gave him the OK. Each day, I would pay him with cash. One day, his mother came by with him and said Danny had a bunch of money and wondered why. Once I showed her what we were working on she was relieved! Some sculptures I have done, I like, due to the design, but this one is a favorite because of my children and my friend Danny."

Originally created as an edition of 21, this sculpture has been sold out for many years. You can find this life-sized sculpture in many public art collections around the United States, including in Colorado, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Connecticut, Nebraska, Illinois, Nevada, Virginia, Ohio and Minnesota, and others.

Envisioned as a companion piece of sorts to 1978's "Departure", "The Valentine" was created by George in 1997 as an edition of 21.

Although the life-sized edition has now sold out, we do offer this sweet sculpture in a table top size maquette. It makes a wonderful and memorable gift for your sweetheart.

Please join us in wishing the amazing Cammie Lundeen a very Happy Birthday today! Cammie's deep love for animals is evident in her realistic depictions of horses, mules, dogs and cats. You can find Cammie's sculptures all over the country, including right here in Loveland's own Benson Sculpture Garden, where you'll find two of Cammie's most beloved sculptures: "Maude and Lottie" and "Pretty in Chinks". From conceptual drawing to installed bronze, it's an amazing process to watch ideas come to life.

George begins each new sculpture with sketches. Once he has his ideas down on paper, loose pinch models are created before he begins the actual sculpture in clay.

This sculpture set, titled "High 5", was created for the Miracle League of Palm Beach Gardens, an organization that creates accessible baseball fields so all kids can play baseball.

All of us here at Lundeen Sculpture would like to wish the incredibly talented Bets Holland Lundeen a very Happy Birthday today! A sculptor and a painter, Bets was part of the Lundeen team that worked on the Stations of the Cross. Drawing inspiration from her background in the preforming arts, Bets' artwork often depicts dancers, actors and children. She has created her own bronze sculptures in the past but focuses more on oil painting these days.

Happy Birthday Bets!

Have you made it up to Cheyenne, Wyoming to see the 62 bronze sculptures all immortalizing Wyoming history and culture? Located around the neighborhood of the Wyoming State Capitol, this is an amazing gift to the people of Cheyenne, and is quickly becoming a treasured part of the city.

Pictured here are two new sculptures, both created by our friend Joey Bainer. They are the newest to be installed, all donated by individuals in the Cheyenne community, for others to enjoy. That is incredibly generous!

Read more about what our friend, art gallery owner Harvey Deselms has planned for this ambitious project here:

Cheyenne’s 62 bronze statues — with more on the way — immortalize Wyoming history and culture all around the neighborhood of the Wyoming State Capitol, the realization of a dream Cheyenne art dealer Harvey Deselms had 15 years ago.

Sharles was a old sculptor friend of George's who had an incredibly unique life story. He also created some of the most unique sculptures to come out of those early sculpting days in Loveland. Sharles came to sculpting after a serious car crash in the 1980s left him stranded him in Loveland with serious amnesia. He passed away over the weekend.
Rest in Peace Sharles.

From Sharles' website:

"In 1982 he suffered a serious car accident in Loveland, Colorado, a small farming community. Left as a semi-invalid with almost total amnesia, Sharles struggled to recover. He was stranded, not knowing his past, home, or friends.

While recovering in Loveland, which had a small bronze foundry, Sharles began observing some of the local sculptors, George Lundeen, Fritz White, Danny Ostermiller, Glenna Goodacre, and Kent Ullberg. He gradually began picking up sculpting techniques and learned the casting process. At first, Sharles created the type of western images that were being produced by the other local artists: Indians, eagles, buffaloes, and other western genre.

But one auspicious day while sculpting, Sharles surrendered to the intense pressures of his unremembered past. His subconscious adoration of flowers, plants and nature, so strongly instilled by his deceased grandmother, became dominant themes. These memories were his inspiration in creating functional and decorative arts as he discarded the local, popular art trends."

"Home Town"
A Loveland Story
In Honor of Mary Erdley Shaffer and Henry Kennedy Shaffer
Commissioned by their daughter Ruth Shaffer McEwen

From a pinch model to the October unveiling back in 2006, here are some photos of Home Town, a special Loveland commission. Ruth Shaffer McEwen attended the unveiling and shared some remarks on that October day.

This unique bronze was placed in Dwayne Webster veterans Park, and depicts Mary and Henry Shaffer, Ruth's parents, pouring over the plans for the home that they eventually would build on Grant Street in 1929. That beautiful home still stands today. (Scroll through for a picture.) Surrounding the base of the sculpture are memories from Ruth, recalling a simpler time in Loveland.

You can visit this life-sized sculpture in Dwayne Webster veterans park here in Loveland, Colorado. We also offer a 15" table top version of "Home Town".

It was quite an honor to create this special sculpture for Ruth and our home town of Loveland, Colorado.

George shared the following words on his personal page when he first heard the news about Dick Butkus:

"The first time I met him, he went out of his way not to talk to me. The athletic director at Illinois had approached him and told him of their plan to have me create a sculpture of him for the stadium. His answer was no….unless they could honor all his teammates, he did not want it done and he certainly didn’t want to put up with me.
It wasn’t until later, after the AD explaining to Dick, how a sculpture of him would be a celebration of football at Illinois would this humble man relent to our plan.
With the help of everyone at the U of I athletic department, my talented team at the studio and the Butkus family, eighteen months later, the sculpture of Dick Butkus, number 50, was dedicated at Memorial Stadium University of Illinois,
Today we remember the man who defined “tough.
This good Catholic boy, is off to meet his maker!
RIP Dick Butkus."

Intimidating. Tough. Gritty. Pick your word. They all work for No. 50/51. Dick Butkus was all of that.

Have you seen Cheyenne, Wyoming's Capitol Avenue Bronze project yet?

We are so proud of our good friend and Cheyenne gallery owner Harvey Deselms who has created a community project that is truly bringing the Cheyenne and the wider community together through art.

We area also extremely proud of our former shop employee, now full time sculptor Joel Turner, who was commissioned to sculpt quite a few of the important citizens of Wyoming. Alongside the work of Joel Turner you'll also find sculptures by Joey Bainer and George Lundeen, along with many others.

Harvey and the Cheyenne community have done a beautiful job honoring the history of Cheyenne through the Capitol Avenue Bronze project, and even more sculptures are on their way.

Read more about this ambitious project in this Forbes article:
