A few weeks ago, we welcomed a new intern, Johannes, through the Youth@Work program! We’re so grateful for all his hard work helping us digitize archival photos, and we were excited to learn that he also loves drawing and sketching.

As part of our ongoing commitment to working alongside and honoring the many communities of Altadena, we invited Johannes to create an artistic offering inspired by the history, spirit, and resilience of Altadena.

We’re so excited to share some of the art he’s been working on with you! 🎨✨

Look what we found in the archives! ✨

We’re taking a trip back to 1987 with That Marfa Fever, adapted by Cornerstone Theater Company from Noël Coward’s Hay Fever, with excerpts from Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and August Strindberg’s The Pelican. Directed by Bill Rauch.

A little bit of Coward, Chekhov, Shakespeare, and Strindberg all coming together in one Cornerstone production. 🎭

Cornerstone has embarked on a new journey! The Manuel Miranda Practice Design Firm and our amazing team of interns and staff, we’re building a virtual archive celebrating more than 40 years of Cornerstone history.

So far, we’ve gone over hundreds of historic production materials that we are excited to share with you very soon.

In the meantime, we’d like yo give you a little sneak peek into some of our discoveries.

📸 These are photos from The Dog Beneath the Skin: An Epidemic Epic (1987): in Miami Beach, Florida. The production adapted W.H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood’s 1935 satirical play to address the contemporary impact and social stigma of the AIDS crisis.

Some snapshots from our Notes to Self booth back in May 💌

Notes to Self invites people to write a letter to their future self, seal it, address it, and leave it with us. One year later, we’ll mail it back. A little time capsule of hopes, reflections, reminders, or whatever felt important in that moment.

Over the past few months, we’ve brought our booth to five different locations across Los Angeles and have had the joy of sharing meaningful conversations and quiet moments with so many people along the way.

And yes... we have a lot of letters to send. We can’t wait for them to find their way back home ✨

🤩 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: HOME MICROPHONE 🤩

Home Microphone was founded by Altadena artists, parents, renand Eaton Fire survivors, Julia Ahumada Grob and Dr. Kahlil Almustafa Gasper, in order to address a critical gap in their community’s recovery: the need for ongoing artistic and cultural programming to support the immediate and long-term recovery of Altadena.

A survivor-guided monthly live performance and workshop series for Eaton Fire survivors. Home Microphone’s monthly neighborhood happenings will bring residents together for joy, reflection, and healing through low-barrier opportunities to share stories, poetry, and music.

Designed to welcome all ages, our neighborhood happenings create a celebratory, life-affirming space for storytelling and community reflection, becoming a reliable anchor for ongoing community connection throughout our continued recovery.

Our friend from Altadena Photographers, Gayle Nicholls-Ali, presents From Ashes We Gather, an in-person exhibit of intimate photos and community produced zines bearing witness to their resilience post Eaton Fire. This exhibit also showcases Community Produced Zines created in Altadena creative workshops at CORE & Harambee.

THIS FRIDAY! Our friends from the Armory Center for the Arts present all the ways to hold tender this land, a group exhibition that explores artists collaborating with land and nature for healing.

Bringing together the work of Anais Franco, Francesca Lalanne, Maddy Inez, and Brie Ruais, this exhibition explores nature, ancestral histories, memory, and healing. Through ceramics, steel, wood, film, and more-than-human life, the artists consider reciprocal relationships with the environment and the ways connection to land, community, and self can become a pathway toward cultural and ecological preservation.
