June 21 I had the opportunity to test for my purple belt. This was an important milestone on a personal level. With everything I’m constantly juggling it’s been really hard for me to stay consistent and focused on my growth in Kenpo.
I was reluctant to take a break because it’s often difficult to resume after a pause and I didn’t want to give up.
After two years of my senseis being incredibly patient with my torturously slow progress, I was invited to test in March. I was granted my purple belt, based on what my Senseis recognized in my potential with the caveat that I needed to go back & get stronger in my techniques before I started the new material. I knew inside that I hadn’t reached my potential &, more importantly, my performance had suffered because I had put myself and my goals so low on my list of priorities. I wanted to look at my belt with pride, not a painful reminder of how I had let myself down and not given myself the nurturing care I give to others in my life.
I asked my Senseis if it would be okay for them to hold onto my belt and allow me to retest. I am lucky that my senseis are so incredibly kind, supportive, and understanding. They knew it was important to me on an emotional level and granted my request.
I retested in June and once again received my purple belt, but this time I felt that I had taken care of myself, prioritized my growth, and realized some of my potential in this art form. I still have a long journey ahead, but now my purple belt, black gi, and studies forward are filled with excitement, inspiration, positivity, and a strong sense of aspiration. I also feel that the extra time my senseis gave me, provided me with a strong foundation that is making me feel grounded and equipped for the study of the higher belts. I am indebted to my Senseis for not only guiding me in this art form, but supporting me with empathy on my personal journey through this form. Kenpo is more than a physical self defense form, it is an art form that forces you to look within and come face to face with life. The Senseis at know this, are centered in the spiritual practice, and truly guide us students in Mind, body, & spirit. 🙏
