The Integrated Voice Practice is a holistic voice program for actors that includes a six-step system for integrated voice technique. Step one is SELF-AWARENESS.
A few months ago, I did a consultation with a potential client. They were telling me about the challenges they were having with their voice, and they mentioned doing some exercises from other coaches they'd worked with, exercises from YouTube, and even following various bits of advice from friends.
I told them that the individual exercises they described sounded great, but I suspected that the reason they weren't feeling any shifts in their voice goals were because they were trying to put together disparate pieces of voice technique without understanding how those individual pieces would be relevant for THEIR particular goals.
I think this is an issue for a lot of people who are piecing together their voicework—they're getting bits and pieces of voice training out of context…without understanding what the exercises are meant to do, let alone how those pieces should fit together as a whole to benefit THEIR voice and speaking.
One of my priorities when I'm coaching is to first help people become aware of their personal patterns of breathing and voicing, their patterns of attention and ability to focus, and even their patterns of practicing. That’s what we cover in the SELF-AWARENESS step. Some concepts and skills gained are:
✅The three pieces of your vocal instrument.
✅Autonomic Nervous System vs. Central Nervous System breathing.
✅Doing your breathing vs. letting go of your breathing.
✅How to breathe when practicing voicework.
✅What healthy voicing feels like.
✅What it means to be present (and how to begin to cultivate an easy presence).
Not only does the Self-Awareness step help clients develop the basic foundations of voicework in general, it also helps them develop a sense of their personal habits: where they may be doing too much and where they could begin cultivating some new habits.
If you're looking for a holistic voice practice where your particular voice and nervous system are taken into account—then consider joining The Integrated Voice Practice.
