Interview with Peter Valentino - Acting Basics Part 5

I:How does one gauge talent in a child? How can that talent be fostered?
PV:Talent, by definition, is when someone has an innate ability that other people don’t have. Having a strong imagination is the foundation of acting talent. The parent should try to foster the child’s imagination in any way, such as the arts. For example: drawing, painting, singing, music, theater, and acting. They all tend to work together, so when you notice that your child has a strong imagination, try to think of that as a potential or existing talent rather than as a bother. See what you can do to notice where that imagination leads. Maybe the child will start to sing, act, or perform in some way. These are all expressions of talent.

Interview with Peter Valentino - Acting Basics Part 4

I: How can parents guide or help their kids with their career?
PV: There’s the cliche ‘stage mother’ concept, and sometimes a parent will have the time and ability to help to that degree. I have a few stage mothers with whom I work. It’s great because they’re really helping their kids by taking them to classes and auditions and such. It is a commitment for any parent, mother or father, who has the time to look for auditions and to get their kids there. Parents can also get the help of management or an agency in addition to listing their kids on casting sites.

Interview with Peter Valentino - Acting Basics Part 3

I: What can parents do to get their kids interested in acting?
PV: Parents should look at behavior, and if the child is already extroverted, then parents should find an acting class that will be an outlet for their child’s nature. These kids can then become stronger performers. However, actors are not all extroverts. A shy or more artistic child can also be very good at acting. This can lead to a greater sense of courage, and balance the introverted and extroverted tendencies. It is my strong feeling that acting training will make the student understand themselves better internally as well as help the more introverted student to express what’s inside.

Interview with Peter Valentino - Acting Basics Part 2

I: How do children break into the acting industry?
PV: The best way for kids to break into the industry is through commercials. By doing commercial auditions and looking to get work in commercials, you can later get picked up for narrative projects. I have one student who currently gets many commercials, and when I first worked with her, she got a national spot in a Mott’s Apple Juice commercial. She’s now building her college fund. The main things they need are to take classes, get headshots, and to start doing auditions.
