✍🏽 “Riding these mean streets
we sit on plastic seats
tightening our grip on grab rails ’round tight corners…”
This excerpt from my poem “These Mean Streets” takes us on a bus ride through the inner city, where every landmark becomes a memory, every corner reveals a wound, and every mile traveled asks a deeper question:
What stories about ourselves have we inherited, and which ones are we ready to leave behind?
Performed at a recent Juneteenth spoken word event, this poem explores the journey from survival to self-determination, from inherited limitation to resurrection.
Because liberation isn’t only something that happened in history.
It’s something we choose, again and again, within ourselves.
