A Sacred Journey

A Sacred Journey ASJ is the story of one man who struggles with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The race is to finish the mural before it’s too late.

When one brother is diagnosed with a shattering illness, another brother is forced to face his demons as the family struggles to pick up the pieces and stay together in this powerful portrait of love and what it means to truly care for each other. He shocks his family when he expresses his desire to give a mural to his community. With six months left to live, he embarks on a journey that allows hi

s vision to be painted on the wall so that he is forever remembered. As the mural slowly comes alive, the disease quickly attacks his physical body. He is then faced with the decision to live bedridden and dependent on an artificial ventilator and feeding tube without the ability to eat, speak or move.

ASJ is still alive!
I screened A Sacred Journey at the "We Are Ethnic Studies" conference in Fresno this weekend where administrators, educators, and other presenters rallied around to discuss lesson plans and continue the fight to liberate ethnic studies. The screening went well and was received like familia! Gracias Lupe Carrasco Cardona for inviting and tying A Sacred Journey into your education curriculum.
And thanks also to all the wonderful souls pushing to protect our precious ancestral knowledge. I was so impressed to see such stellar dedication to our children's future. La Lucha Sigue!

Thank you all for my b-day wishes.
One year ago, one day after my b-day our beloved brother Juan moved onto another realm. Considering the conditions, I see it as a b-day gift and honor to forever celebrate his death anniversary close to my birthdate.
When I really think about it, what’s left of him are endless memories. When people ask me about Juan, I’ve noticed I speak of him as a unique character who wanted nothing more than to laugh, help others, love, and want peace around him. He was pure love. He is pure love! In this photo, he is carrying one of his best friends, my grandfather. Something he often did.
I miss you, bro. I miss you watching you shadow box with my dad. I miss clowning around with you. I miss seeing you...
I don’t know where you went, physically, but I know that you forever will live inside my heart.
I love you, Johnny!

The conversation on how to take care of yourself while caring for a loved one continues.
I'm grateful to be sharing the mic with legendary Dolores Huerta, our one and only Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo, and many other resourceful and powerful women who will share experience, knowledge, and most of all resources.
There are tons of free resources for caregivers, including therapy, 24-hour operators, and financial support. Come learn about this and much more on February 19th at 1:00pm, which just so happens to be my brother Juan's birthday.
You must register for this event:
