#6 THE CUYAHOGA I grew up in Akron. I am in town to see DEVO, so I am going to sing the song with a bit of their aesthetic in the backbeat. The Cuyahoga is an infamous river. The whole world seems to know that it caught on fire in 1969. Randy Newman wrote a song about it, as did R.E.M. The disaster caused by industrial waste more or less spearheaded an environmental movement. I thank all those citizens who have participated in cleaning up this amazing river. I thank all of you everywhere out there who participates in the stewardship of your rivers to keep them beautiful and bountiful for generations to come.

The Cuyahoga is of historic economic importance to Northeast Ohio because after the Erie Canal was completed, it connected Lake Erie with the Ohio River, and therefore the Gulf Of Mexico. It’s an important river to me because I grew up in Akron and used to do quite a bit of exploring around the area. I made this film in the town of Peninsula, very close to the G.A.R. Hall, which is a venue I have performed in. I fished this river as a kiddo. I used to love exploring the underground parts of it where it flows right under the Civic Theater in downtown Akron, the very same theatre my Dad took me to see films like “Space Odyssey:2001” and the very same theatre that hometown heroes DEVO are playing this week. I am very excited to be back in my hometown to see this extremely influential band that came to be in the years before punk and attempted to connect with Joe Walsh (another local hero) back in Topanga Canyon before he joined the Eagles. They also recorded an amazing session with Neil Young, who connected through them much earlier via his song “Ohio” which tells about the four students who were shot down while the members of Devo were forming in the same town. DEVO changed the world, and they continue to play, so I jumped at the opportunity. to see them in our collective home town. Thanks again for listening and I hope to see you out on the river some day.

Truth be told it wasn’t “my” dog actually but it was Katie Shaw’s dog. I met Mia the Black Akita first in Chillicothe, Ohio when Katie was living there. Mia pulled hard on her walks and was pretty much a beast who, if you were a burglar wanting to rob a house and saw her face through the window, you’d probably skip that house. She was super loyal and fun and eventually met her match out in the High Desert of Joshua Tree. This was just a tune I wrote one day while she was stumbling around in the heat, trying to get comfortable. There seems to be a close kinship with “Norwegian Wood,” a Lennon tune that has inspired quite a few of my songs in the Drop D tuning position. Since that time in the High Desert, Katie picked out another Akita called “Joni,” who I also wrote a song for. It’s just a favorite breed of hers and now mine after being in such proximity to these bear hunters.

In other irony, I just went to Japan and enjoyed some bear curry while up at a mountain lodge. I did not expect that to be on the bingo card for the day, but the Tautasha Lodge owner (up in the mountains outside of Kyoto) hunted and grew all the food we ate. I sing this song often, and it has most definitely grown since the day I recorded it with Marc Howard in the studio cabin at Victoria Williams’s place in Joshua Tree. I used it to kick off the Ammunition album, and it set the mood, with the great Don Heffington on drums. I have a few tunes which occasionally bring the tears out in certain audience members, and this is one of them. I love when you share your black dog stories with me. All the best from Tim E. Book #11 for 2026 “SONG OF OURSELVES: WALT WHITMAN & THE FIGUT FOR DEMOCRACY” by Mark Edmonson was the slow burn(for me because I took my time), microscopic examination of Walt Whitman s “Song Of Myself” which of course contains multitudes, as all blades of grass do. Whitman comforts us in times of despots & scoundrels who will all die long before democracy fades. They might kick us when we are down, so we recall the compassion of a man who sat with countless, wounded Civil War soldiers & comforted them, not calling them suckers like some soulless, reality TV stars who know absolutely nothing about reality. Happy Birthday Walt Whitman, as your country approaches 250 years.

I dropped into Psychobilly Barbershop in Columbus. Ohio & asked if they had time to make one less hippy in the world. ! PS totes still a hippy. Ev’ry now & then I just like a change up. I bet you by & I’ll have plenty more hair. tour dates on TimEaston dot com certainly by I’ll be part hippy or “grey Beatle” and then by Europe November & 2027 & Australia in March I’ll have a full mop top again. Who needs more than one or two haircuts per year?

HWY 62 LOVE SONG
I wanted a gentle closer for my fIREHORSE lp and found it with this ode to my old community up in the High Desert of Joshua Tree, California. Producer Kevin Nolan put an easy going SoCal glimmer on the mix. Before moving to Nashville, I lived in the High Desert for seven years. There is only one road that gets you there from the lower desert, and that is Highway 62. I have dear friends in the region and love to return and play The Joshua Tree Music Festival or perhaps teach songwriting workshops with armed forces veterans involved. I am very grateful for all the time I was able to spend just staring at the sky in that sacred place. I have recorded this song before, but I wanted to do a full band treatment for one take, and this is it. A classic tune for a classic place that affects all lucky travelers who make it there for a night or two under the stars.
The wind was born up on Highway 62

I was taken to the station & put on a train. My buddy said “see you next time.” I felt truly lucky. We covered “Factory Girl” last night in Yokohama. Always a fun one. This tour of Japan was so delicious. I played nine shows covering 54 original songs & a few covers by Lucinda Williams, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan on his birthday, Beatles, The Ramones, and The Stones of course. I heard Jon Dee Graham’s voice booming through the late night club speakers at & then crossed a bridge under the Yokohama moon & thought about all the friends I’ve lost along the way, and all the joy that is here on earth taking strong human form in the exhuberance of the Japanese. Domo arrigato gozimas to & all who have made this adventure possible. Thanks to all the Japanese musicians who have learned my songs better than me. Thanks for putting me back in touch with the places I was when I wrote them. I started a new song last night after soaking in the hot baths at the Plumm Hotel. The voice memo demo will be on my Patreon page first. That platform gets all the raw tunes as downloads first, then as part of a completed album later. Sometimes you find a river. Sometimes the river finds you. Up in the virgin forrests outside Kyoto the Yura River begins. It is one of the longer rivers in Japan that runs North to the Sea Of Japan rather than the pacific. We were parked next this river for two days & enjoyed the wild boar, venison, and BEAR CURRY that the Tautasha Lodge owner owner hunted in the area. The rainy season had begun. Green lushness everywhere & amazing veggies from the garden. I played a gig at the lodge & jammed a few tunes with the amazing Taro on mandolin, who plays with Peter Rowan when he tours Japan & also had a picture of Bill Monroe holding him as a kiddo. He & his wife opened the set & they were the best opening band I’ve ever worked with. They were called ATOWA. Just beautiful songs & harmonies. Amazing stuff. Makes you want to write. Entering Osaka afterwards was like culture shock, but I played with some killer musicians there too. Then to Fukuyama where Bug&Rhino crushed it with more heartily played songs & harmonies. In Tokyo, Anya joined me on violin & also sang harmonies. Next is Yokohama to play the biggest headling show I’ve ever had in Japan there are still a few tix. Thanks Keiji Matsumoto for filming this & taking me for the best meals of my life. Thanks Murakami San for the excellent driving. Here’s to more rivers in Japan.
