We’ve been in a 7-year battle with the City of L.A. to save our beloved 24-year-old treehouse – the centerpiece of Boney Island and a local landmark with a lot of history.

While we were finally granted Zoning Administration approval in December 2023, the LA Dept. of Building & Safety (LADBS) is making it nearly impossible to obtain the required building permit to keep the structure in place.

LADBS gave us guidelines to follow for a Single-Family Dwelling even though we keep telling them it’s a 110-square-foot treehouse built for our daughters in 2000. They are also requiring architectural & structural plans, geological reports, etc. which could cost us another $30K to $40K. We’re done spending and don’t want to start a GoFundMe as there’s no guarantee we’ll be granted a building permit.

Therefore, unless someone out there has a connection to obtain an exemption or a magic wand, it looks as though we’ll have to take it down next month due to an upcoming court date with the City Attorney.
