My challenge in painting Elegant Evening at Biltmore was not to convey the heroic scale of this fairy-tale castle, but to make it warmly personal. I utilized glittering lights to suggest a festive evening affair in progress. I invite you to climb aboard your elegant coach and join the celebration.

That's what my Hometown Memories series, inspired by my boyhood in Placerille, has been.

With Hometown Lake, I move beyond memory to the realm of my deepest imaginings. I'm intrigued by the vision of a lakeside village, where calm waters soothe my tranquil days as I while away the time swimming, fishing, daydreaming. I believe that people in every part of our nation and all parts of our culture share this vision, this longing for a peaceful lakeside place.

About This Artwork - Thomas Kinkade

I remember seeing a painting of a similar subject in a church as I was growing up and the image has always stuck with me. Perhaps I realized then that this was my chance to create a composition reinterpreting this scene. Here we see Jesus strolling comfortably with Peter. In his hands, Peter holds the symbolic keys to God's kingdom. What truths and insights could they be sharing? How marvelous to have the chance to listen in on the kind and insightful words of the Savior as He patiently shares wisdom with those He loves.

"What's around the next bend? What lies at the end of the trail? When I walk an unfamiliar path, curiosity drives me on. The Forest Chapel portrays a daydream I've had many times: often while hiking some wooded trail I've come upon a spectacular flowering meadow and thought, "What a wonderful place to worship God." The idea of a chapel in an unspoiled natural setting has intrigued me for years.

In The Forest Chapel I have tried to capture a harmony between what's within and what's without. Light glows from the chapel windows, suggesting the warm spirit of fellowship within. Shafts of morning light filter, golden, through the trees, dappling the forest floor with a divine light. The sweet melody of psalm singing rises up, to be joined by the gentle murmur of the brook that flows past the house of worship.
A Holy Spirit dwells in the chapel and in the glade that houses it. Both proclaim the presence of God."
