SR-71 DID run out of liquid nitrogen ! I have repeated before that they never ran out of liquid nitrogen, but they did.
Patrolling the Soviet-Polish border almost precisely 43 years ago, December 21, 1981, after a fifth tank refill of SR-71 #958 near Goose Bay, Labrador pilot BC Thomas, along with RSO Jay Reed, noted that they ran out of their supply of liquid nitrogen! 
At Blackbird speeds and temperatures, oxygen becomes explosive and can spontaneously ignite in the tanks and fuel lines. To prevent this, all six fuel tanks are purged with pure nitrogen before being filled. The Blackbird also carries 260 liters of liquid nitrogen in 3 dewars [for this flight, the SR-71 only had 2 – 106 liter liquid nitrogen dewars. The 3rd 50-liter dewar was added in the mid-1980’s]. This nitrogen expands into its gaseous form as it is pumped into the fuel tanks to top them off as the fuel is consumed.
Without the nitrogen, the empty fuel tanks would collapse from the increased pressure when returning to lower altitudes to refuel.
This meant the fuel tanks could not be pressurized to inert the fuel fumes at high Mach. This problem was easily handled by flying at a slower speed,
So BC limited the cruise to 2.6 Mach at the end of an almost 10-hour flight home to Beale.

Oxygen doesn’t explode, nor does it spontaneously ignite. It’s an oxidiser. It requires a fuel.
The fire triangle is fuel, heat, oxygen. The oxygen is not the fuel.
Introduce a burning taper into a pure oxygen environment and the taper just burns brighter.
