• Helen J Gallery is thrilled to announce “Refraction/Abstraction,” a group exhibition featuring works by Yoon Jongju, Candice Joo, Minku Kim, Hyemin Lee, Alex Paik, and Park YoungHa.

“Refraction/Abstraction” showcases a dynamic selection of works by leading Korean abstract artists, offering a new perspective on the legacy of the 1970s Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) movement. These artists responded to the troubled period following the Korean War (1950–53) by condensing the formal qualities of their post-industrial reality. The artists on view present varied responses to abstraction that reflect this legacy across the Korean American diaspora, engaging themes of community, the natural world, and collective memory.

Please join us on for an opening reception on Saturday, September 28, from 5-7 pm. The exhibition will be on view through November 28th.

Helen J Gallery is thrilled to present 𝘒𝘈𝘙𝘔𝘈: 𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴, Choi Young Wook’s second exhibition with the gallery. Please join us at our opening reception on Saturday, May 11, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

This presentation solidifies Choi’s role as a leading figure in Korean contemporary art and showcases the latest developments in his ongoing Karma series. Choi is most known for his intricate paintings of moon jars—traditional Korean vessels made of white porcelain that date back to the Joseon dynasty. Choi values this motif for its varying hues, skewed gaits, and unadorned exteriors. The artist considers the vessel a medium of communication, containing the story of universal human life.

Clay has always been adept at record-keeping, capturing microbes in fossilized seabeds, and forming the world’s archeological finds. By foregrounding his moon jars’ preserved histories and identities, Choi finds an outlet for his pensive disposition. His mottled surfaces become character studies of subjects whose inner contents are unknown but whose past is on display.
