ONE YEAR GONE – AND AN ANNIVERSARY TO REMEMBER

It has been one long and sad year since we lost our friend and mentor Shel Talmy, one of the finest record producers know to popular music, and in many ways a principal architect of the way real rock’n’roll would forever come to be presented. No more so than on a disc which has its own unique anniversary at this time. A full sixty years ago, ‘My Generation’ by The Who hit the ears of an unsuspecting public and swiftly became rock’s enduring anthem of disaffection. The Talmy touch is firmly enshrined in this and those other constants in the soundtrack of our lives by The Who, Kinks, Creation, Bowie, Manfreds etc.

Vale Shel, and thank you once again from the bottom our hearts.

As many of you have noted, today would have been Shel's 88th birthday. We all miss him terribly, but we know he is up there pushing the faders in his inimitable way at the great studio in the sky. We also wanted to let you know there will be some exciting news to share in the coming months regarding his catalogue, so stay tuned!

SHEL MEMORIAL EXCERPTS - PART 1

MC Harry Zinn leads off the tributes with a heartfelt - and heartwarming - reminiscence of Shel and their adventures in the hostelries of the San Fernando Valley. (Unfortunately due to copyright reasons, the visual history Harry refers that was shown at the memorial cannot be shared here).

Shel’s memorial at the Grammy Museum last night was a warm and moving occasion, with friends, fans and colleagues all gathered alongside his widow Jan to celebrate the life of this unique, one-of-a-kind individual, with a myriad “Shel stories” swapped at every turn.

Hosted by Shel’s close friend, the dapper and ever charming Harry Zinn, the program included a visual trip through the great man’s career, a handful of brief but very moving spoken tributes – including a surprise live call from Dave Davies – and, as Shel would have of course insisted upon, some live rock’n’roll.

As soon as the footage can be edited, we will share the speeches and music highlights here. In the meantime, some snaps from what will remain a most memorable event for all present, including speakers Harry Zinn; Alec Palao (holding a copy of Shel’s very first production by Debbie Sharron, who was herself in attendance); Shel’s daughter Jonna Sargent; Paul Thompson and Angela Edwards (old friends who date back to Shel’s time in the UK) and actor/director Keith Szarabajka.

The musical program featured an acoustic ‘Sunny Afternoon’ from The Waymores, the last act to be produced by Shel, followed by full band versions of further Talmy classics sung by Los Angeles scene stalwarts Willie Aron (‘Summer Song’), Andrew Sandoval (‘Semi-Detached Suburban Mr James’), Chris Price (‘If Paradise Is Half As Nice’) and Danny Winebarger (‘Bald Headed Woman’), along with Shel’s drinking buddy and vocalist of Strangers In A Strange Land, the redoubtable Paul Kopf (‘If I Stay Too Long’ and ‘The Kids Are Alright’) and, last but certainly not least, the legendary talent of Evie Sands (‘Friday On My Mind’). Percussion was handled by the dependable Ben Lecourt and Dave Jenkins, and of course you couldn’t keep Alec off the bandstand if you tried. Photos by Susan Moll.

Despite the heartbreaking events of the past week in Los Angeles, Shel’s memorial will still be going ahead as planned this coming Sunday. We will of course be sharing footage and photos from the event.

In the meantime, we encourage donations to charitable organizations such as MusiCares.org, who are helping out musicians that lost everything in the fires, including some who have worked with Shel.
