🎶🎓 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2026 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS! 🎓🎶

🎤 YASMEENA ATIA | VOCALIST
A jazz vocalist, composer, arranger, dancer and actress from Newark, New Jersey, Yasmeena is currently studying at the USC Thornton School of Music, where she performs with several ensembles, including the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. Her performance credits include the Essentially Ellington Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the GRAMMY Museum and The World Stage.

🎸 JOAQUIN GARDE | INSTRUMENTALIST
A Los Angeles-born guitarist, composer and songwriter, Joaquin began playing guitar at age eight and developed through programs including The Colburn School, Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center and L.A. County High School for the Arts. He is currently studying at Berklee College of Music on a full tuition scholarship and has received recognition from DownBeat Magazine, YoungArts and Music Center Spotlight.

This year’s scholarship is presented as the Holman UMC Jazz Studies Scholarship, in recognition of Holman United Methodist Church’s generous support in raising $4,000 toward this year’s scholarship fund.

We are also grateful to the individual community members who made donations in support of this year’s scholarships.

Thanks to this collective support, Yasmeena and Joaquin will each receive a $2,250 scholarship, an increase from last year’s $1,500 award.

Both Yasmeena and Joaquin will also receive a performance opportunity during the Emerging Artist Set featuring Kenneth Brown II at the 7th Annual Leimert Park Jazz Festival on August 29. They will be introduced on stage by Pastor Victor Cyrus-Franklin II of Holman UMC.

🎺 WEST COAST GET DOWN: HOMEGROWN

West Coast Get Down is a groundbreaking collective with members who developed their craft at The World Stage Art, Education & Performance Gallery in the heart of Leimert Park Village. Their music draws from jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop and the traditions of the African diaspora, while reflecting the community that helped shape them.

That connection to The World Stage and Leimert Park makes this performance especially meaningful to us. The Leimert Park Jazz Festival is produced in association with The World Stage, and we’re honored to present West Coast Get Down on our stage this year.

This special performance will be led by, Tony Austin, as they come together to honor the life and legacy of Ryan Porter, a founding member and creative force within West Coast Get Down who we lost earlier this year.

Ryan was a Los Angeles native, a trombonist and composer whose music was deeply rooted in the traditions of funk, soul, blues and jazz. He was also a collaborator, mentor and friend to so many musicians who came through the same community that shaped West Coast Get Down.

The band will perform selections from Ryan’s original compositions and arrangements, celebrating the music he created and the lasting impact he had on the jazz community.

🎺 FROM THE SUNDAY JAZZ STAGE TO THE LEIMERT PARK JAZZ FESTIVAL

We first heard Inglewood’s own Kenneth Brown II when he sat in on the open jam during Chris Powe’s Sunday Jazz Artist Residency at the beginning of 2024. (1st 🎥) We were impressed by what we heard and invited Kenneth to become an Artist in Residence from October through December 2025. (2nd 🎥 in comments)

Now, we’re excited to bring Kenneth to the 7th Annual Leimert Park Jazz Festival for his first festival performance as a bandleader.

🎶 FROM THE NEXT GENERATION TO A LIVING LEGEND.

One of the things we love most is seeing generations of musicians together on the same stage.

🎷 At the 7th Annual Leimert Park Jazz Festival, we’ll open with the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center Youth Jazz Band, young musicians carrying forward the tradition that Fernando Pullum has nurtured in Los Angeles for decades.

🎹 Later in the day, Bobby West will take the stage. A pianist, composer, educator and cultural steward, Bobby is part of the lineage of Los Angeles jazz that connects Central Avenue, Leimert Park and the music that continues to develop here today.

🫶🏾The beauty of jazz is honoring the musicians who came before while giving young artists the opportunity to find their own voice.

Come hear where it has been and where it’s going.
