GILGAMESH: THE OPERA — FROM ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA TO THE WORLD
Gilgamesh: The Opera represents a landmark in Assyrian performing arts—an ambitious contemporary work that brings one of humanity’s oldest surviving literary masterpieces to the world stage through the universal language of music, opera, dance, visual art, and storytelling.
For the Assyrian Arts Institute, this is about more than creating a performance. It is about preserving, interpreting, and sharing the cultural heritage of ancient Mesopotamia with the world.
In the coming weeks, AAI will share a series of short videos exploring the artistic journey behind Gilgamesh: The Opera.
We will begin in this post with the story of Gilgamesh that inspired the creation of our two-hour live opera performance, followed by videos exploring how the production preserves and translates ancient Mesopotamian heritage into contemporary performance; through its music, characters, choreography, visual imagery, symbolism, and storytelling.
How do we carry a civilization’s heritage forward?
We preserve it.
We create from it.
And we share it with the world.
Through Gilgamesh: The Opera, an ancient story is no longer confined to 12 cuneiform clay tablets. It lives again; in music, on stage, through movement, imagery, and the voices of today’s artists.
