now included in the price of taking a ceramics class at the Workhouse Ceramics Program. This open studio is designed to allow students to practice, trade ideas and create in a relaxed, social atmosphere. Students must be currently enrolled to be eligible for open studio use. With more than 20 hours per week dedicated to Open Studio, students are sure to find the right time to create! The Ceramics Program, housed in Building W-8, is a state-of-the-art, expansive, and open aired facility with two indoor kiln rooms, an outdoor kiln yard, Raku kiln, spray booth, wheels, a fully equipped raw materials lab with ball mill and blunger, a clay storage/mixing room with clay mixing equipment, slab rollers, extruder, extensive shelving and workspace for either hand-building or wheel-thrown work. Our studio facility is also home to six private resident artists’ studios and a retail gallery for the exhibition of Resident and Visiting Artist works. As a part of our commitment to the promotion of artistic and cultural creativity,within our community the Ceramics program at the Workhouse Arts Center will offer any student who wishes to learn more about studio practices, management, and increase their technical knowledge an opportunity to participate in the Workhouse Ceramics Work Study Program. This program also involves the training in various areas of our ceramic studio operations for any beginning thru advanced students wishing to help with daily operational activities in exchange for open access to studio during no-class times and/or tuition reductions.

Resident Artist Sarah Wise’s interactive exhibit “We Are Love” opens in W-8 tonight. It features a community mural and an ongoing mailbox to share and take warm sentiments for spreading love and joy.

Paul Lyon gave us a terrific workshop on foil saggar firing today. Everyone was thrilled with their results! He'll be back running this workshop again in the fall.

Here’s our blue-lovin’ cheerful studio member Tasha Hobbs, and her fresh-from-the-kiln dragon teapot. Tasha has been with us for two years, and we’ve all known the teapot since he was a lump of clay and a sketch. She’s getting ready for a cross country move, and will be so missed. Even behind a mask for much of the time, we knew she was smiling!
The Workhouse has created a new musical performance series called OnStage! Live Music at the Workhouse. Performances begin on Saturday, March 5 with jazz singer Taisha Estrada! Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Taisha Estrada’s style blends Latin styles with jazz, R&B, and pop, and is heavily influenced by the sensory experience of the Caribbean. An evening not to be missed - see you there!!

New show by resident artist, Brian Grow. Brian will be leaving us at the end of this month, so don't miss this opportunity to see his work! Reception this Saturday, February 12th, Building W8, 6 to 9 pm.

Busy hands! Saturday mornings are dedicated to the action-packed Kids and Adults Class. Over five weeks students produce functional and decorative objects; this morning some firm slab boxes. Instructor Pam Eisenmann introduces several hand building strategies, and everybody gets a try on the potters wheel for week five’s grand finale.
Through February 27, Brian Grow presents an array of spectacular work showcasing his deep dive into atmospheric firing. Complex, luminous surfaces reveal the effects of multiple firings in wood, soda, and salt.
Brian leaves us at the end of February after ten years as a resident artist. If you have been putting off acquiring his work, you are duly warned!
It’s high time to visit the gallery in W8, and again in February when Brian will show sculptural work as our Featured Artist.
And we’re off! The first class of 2022 is underway.

Come see the 11th Workhouse Arts Center Clay International exhibition representing the depth and breadth of contemporary functional and sculptural ceramic artworks being created throughout the country.
The exhibit is on view at the Workhouse Arts Center Vulcan Gallery from August 7, 2021 – October 10, 2021. The gallery is currently open Wednesday through Saturday 11:00am – 6:00pm and Sunday Noon – 5:00pm.

Two part vessels was today’s lesson with Chris Lively. We’re lucky to have him around more during our summer session when he has a break from teaching Parkside Middle Schoolers pinch pots. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!)
