STORY TIME - The origin of my passion for creative networking opportunities
I remember attending my first professional conference. Great sessions. Great networking breaks. Then ... crickets. Once dinner time came, folks scattered. As a first-timer, I found myself wandering the conference center halls trying to figure out WHAT TO DO.
I rounded a corner and found my answer. The Bar. There, in the midst of this modern watering-hole, were my peers. Drinking, connecting, networking, sharing war stories, and so much more.
This, I later learned, is pretty standard for conferences. The daytime is for learning. Evening networking takes place with a drink in the hand and an open tab.
DON'T GET ME WRONG. I'm not here to knock anyone's preferred way to network. If the bar scene works for you, that's A-OK with me.
STILL, it was clear to me that this model of networking probably wasn't connecting with everyone. There are lots of folks who, for a variety of reasons, are excluded from this scene. Those reasons may include:
• Chosen Sobriety
• Health Issues
• Financial Constraints
• And Many More
And so, I made a pitch, and I'm forever grateful that the folks with the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers gave me a shot to host our first "After Hours". Creative programming opportunities for those, like me, looking for an alternative. The first year we brought trivia, karaoke, and a live-action game of Family Feud.
The reviews poured in favorably, and three years later our "After Hours" events have become a staple of the conference. I'm truly convinced that a similar model would add tremendous value to YOUR next summit, conference, or regional training, and I would LOVE to talk to you to figure out how we can make it happen, together!
