I am delighted to return to Honduras for another exhibition. “More than My Mistakes,” inspired by my extensive experience with the detained population, has been transformed into a compelling series of artworks, including audio pieces, mixed media, and watercolors. These works will be showcased at the Museum of Anthropology and History in San Pedro Sula. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated team at the Museum for the National Identity of Honduras for their unwavering commitment to promoting the country’s culture.

I’m thrilled to visit the workshops of fellow artists in the EFA community. Witnessing the exceptional quality of their work and their dedication to our craft is truly inspiring. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to engage in conversations and socialize with peers.

A big thank you to EFA for organizing these annual events, which allow us to learn more about the work of others who are so close yet often overlooked. This was just the first week of the open studios, and we have two more weeks to explore and appreciate the many studios and their incredible creations.

"Pájaro Enjaulado-Caged Bird" is not merely a mixed media on wooden panels; it is an immersive exploration of emotions and visions that permeated my artistic consciousness during a profound chapter in my journey as an artist and educator. Crafted years ago, this large-scale masterpiece is a poignant narrative of my transformative eight-year volunteer experience within the confines of a Connecticut correctional. As an artist deeply committed to my craft and the human experience, the reciprocity I encountered in that prison echoes in every stroke and hue, flooding my present with enduring love and admiration for the resilient women who shared their stories. Rejecting the notion of incarceration as a solution, just as one denies the efficacy of bombs for peace, "Pájaro Enjaulado" becomes a visual testament to my convictions.
This creation, spanning months of meticulous dedication, mirrors the scale of my own being. Its magnitude allows for a profound dialogue, an intimate conversation where I engage with the work as an equal. Within its dimensions, I unravel the complexities of seclusion, offering a visual discourse on how it interrupts and shapes our lives—a theme acutely relevant during the recent global pandemic.

"Dance in Blues"
Mixed media on canvas
"Dance in Blues" represents a revisit to my past works and marks a current phase where I've initiated a parallel series, distinct from "The Pink House Series." Within this artistic exploration, I delve into the influence of unseen forces shaping our world—from the cosmic significance of the Big Bang to the intricacies of human attraction. I delve into the impact of unseen forces shaping our world—from the cosmic significance of the Big Bang to the intricacies of human attraction. Rather than providing answers, "Dance in Blues" intentionally raises questions, embracing uncertainty and the irresponsibility of seeking definitive answers in art.

Following the conclusion of Art Basel Miami Beach earlier this month, Lamborghini showcased a curated collection of commissioned art pieces, among which mine was featured. Subsequently, the exhibition journeyed to the Lamborghini Lounge NYC, uniting a comprehensive display of artwork commissioned by Lamborghini dealers across the Americas to commemorate the brand's 60th anniversary.

I often revisit earlier stages of my work, exploring themes that serve as genuine reflections of my past, particularly my childhood. This mixed media piece on canvas embodies a sincere recollection, drawing parallels between personal memories and visions of a timeless, ethereal realm. Focused on toucans, creatures known for their lifelong monogamy and distinctive, sometimes harsh calls, the artwork encapsulates their song's beauty, faithfulness, and grounding nature. Through a dreamlike atmosphere, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in a world where these birds act as conduits, guiding us to appreciate the unadorned beauty of our surroundings and dispelling illusions in favor of a genuine connection with the present moment.

Embarking on this commission was a captivating odyssey. Upon being entrusted with the artistic task by Lamborghini to craft a masterpiece encapsulating the essence of their automobiles, I journeyed to Bologna. There, within the confines of the production plant, I immersed myself in the mesmerizing dance of creation, particularly enraptured by the allure of the new hybrid marvel, "Revuelto."

Wandering through the industrial tapestry, my senses were entranced by the synthesis of artistic tradition and avant-garde technology, a choreography where echoes of the past intertwined seamlessly with the pulsating heartbeat of the present. Witnessing this harmonious convergence of epochs within the same sacred space was a transcendent experience, pushing against the boundaries that confine mere mortal timelines.

As I bid you all adieu, anticipate the rendezvous with both my soulful creation and me at the illustrious Art Basel Miami this December. Until then, let the anticipation for this artistic spectacle stir within you like a crescendo awaiting its orchestral unveiling.

It also looks at how the q***r body has had to heal and survive aspects of the status quo, impacted by capitalism and worldwide power dynamics. I am interested in the normalized, binary construction of gender, assigned at birth based solely on body parts. My collages/mixed media/paintings deconstruct preconceived and traditional categorizations of gender, pushing the viewer to expand their minds and consider new ones. It requires many hours of work, not only to find the necessary images and build a story with them. The cut-out images that I appropriate and work with are placed in backgrounds to work with my brushes and oil colors. Transparent layers of oil paint are placed one over the other, perfecting the depth effects' lights and shadows.

"This is not the Last Supper."
Mixed media on canvas - 24" x 24" 2021 *Cut out images from different sources, glue, acrylic, layers of varnish, opaque and transparent oil, and other materials.

As a child, I was raised amidst the captivating presence of a reproduction of Leonardo's iconic masterpiece, "The Last Supper," within the confines of my home. Those timeless figures, arranged in a dramatic tableau, appeared to engage in enigmatic dialogues beyond my youthful comprehension. It was as though I stood on the threshold of a conversation in which I could neither fully grasp nor actively participate.

In due course, a profound revelation dawned upon me, illuminating the deep connection between my current artistic endeavors and those formative hours spent contemplating Leonardo's magnum opus. I recognized that the meticulous world I crafted within my dollhouse, inhabited by characters liberated from the constraints of gender, bore a profound kinship to the painstaking labor I had undertaken as a child, recreating the intricate details of Leonardo's masterpiece.

This awakening was not merely a revelation of personal artistic lineage but a profound revelation of the symbiotic relationship between Leonardo's era and our contemporary moment. It became clear that my work, like "The Last Supper," transcended its temporal confines to resonate with the enduring myth of that final supper. Moreover, I saw in both Leonardo's masterstroke and my creations the intrinsic theatricality inherent in our human acts, forever etching the narratives of our existence.

My artistic journey has evolved into a dialogue with the past and the present, bridging the chasm of time to weave together the threads of artistry, history, and theatricality. Through my work, I aim to continue this timeless conversation, inviting viewers to explore the enduring mysteries of human connection and the dramatic tapestry of our shared existence.

Life before pandemic at the Corona Public Library in Queens, NY. From time to time I liked to give series of watercolor workshop as part of my administrative job at Queens Museum. I enjoyed to be in touch with my people, the immigrant communities. Each session was a success and we had to improvise spaces to get enough room for all the talented artists that wanted to be part of the class!

Watercolor on paper cut out images and other elements. 22" x 30" - 2021/2022

"Who among us does not harbor their most clandestine yearnings? Those innermost desires that we dare to entertain only within solitude? These audacious musings are at odds with the puritanical conventions that may or may not still govern our lives. This theatrical opus delves into the private realms of intimacy, where the characters within this miniature domain seize their singular moments of liberation. In this parallel world, nestled within the confines of a doll's house, it beckons us to ponder the authenticity of our existence, prompting the contemplation: What, indeed, constitutes reality?"

This coming September 7th, the only art fair specializing in works on paper will open. I will present three of my works, La Casa Rosada/The Pink House, a series I have been working on for several years and contains videos, mix-media works on canvas, etc. Still, here because of the specificity of this fair, I only presented a few works on paper.
For more of my current work, you can always visit: www.guidogaraycochea.com
I hope to see them!
The fair will be open to the public from September 7-10.
