Creating Portraits of Immigrants
People are endlessly fascinating. For the past 12 years, I’ve been painting mostly commissioned portraits of accomplished and well-to-do people and enjoying the work. Those paintings are in public and private collections throughout the United States, the United Kingdom and Italy -- including in the collection of the U.S. Embassy in London, U.K. But the hateful language hurled at immigrants and refugees beginning in the 2016 election made me decide to set that work aside for a time. It seemed to me that the American people were losing sight of who today’s immigrants and refugees really are. So I set out to meet, interview, sketch, paint and write the stories of newcomers from a variety of countries, religions and cultures for a traveling exhibition designed to refresh memories and open hearts and minds. That exhibition opens to the public in Midtown Manhattan on January 22nd. Click the button for more information. And I hope you can see the show.
