Purpose and Significance

Love: By sacrificing His life for His enemies and the whole world, this event demonstrates the boundless love God has for humanity.

Redemption from Sin: According to Christian theology, it is believed that He took the burden of humanity's sins upon Himself on the cross and paid the price for them.

Salvation: Believers hold that through His death and subsequent resurrection, the way was opened to eternal life.

Sequence of Events

Garden of Gethsemane: Before His betrayal, Jesus prayed in deep mental anguish.

Torture: Roman soldiers whipped Him, crowned Him with thorns, and mocked Him.

Journey to Golgotha: He carried the cross upon which He would be crucified to 'Golgotha' (the Hill of the Skull).
