Circa 2007, Mika Brzezinski, daughter of the distinguished national security scholar Zbigniew Brzezinski, joined the Morning Joe broadcast on MSNBC as co-host alongside Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman from Florida who had already built a loyal following as the show's anchor since its launch earlier that year. Both were in their own separate relationships at the time, and the idea of anything beyond a sharp and occasionally combustible on-air partnership was not something either of them spent any time considering. What the television audience saw across the table from each other every weekday morning was chemistry that felt almost too natural to ignore, the kind of easy, pointed, finish-each-other's-sentences dynamic that comes from two people who genuinely respect each other's intelligence and are not afraid to challenge it out loud. Their colleague Willie Geist later said simply that they had always had good chemistry, and that when both of them eventually found themselves single, he was not in the least surprised by what followed. Joe Scarborough finalized his second divorce in 2013 and later described the years that followed as a quiet, self-searching period during which he realized he had been approaching his own life the wrong way. He later said with characteristic self-awareness that he had spent a couple of years essentially moping around his house, and that at some point he recognized he had been doing the emotional equivalent of starring in a romantic comedy where he was his own worst obstacle. When Mika's marriage ended in 2016, the friendship that had built over nearly a decade of mornings together began to shift in a direction neither of them had quite planned. By early 2017 the change was visible to those who knew them, and in May of that year, during a trip to the coastal town of Antibes in the south of France to celebrate Mika's fiftieth birthday, Joe got down on one knee on a hill leading up to a hotel bar and proposed with an oval diamond ring. Mika later told Vanity Fair that when she saw him on one knee she started laughing, nervously and almost uncontrollably, and then said absolutely. On November 24, 2018, Thanksgiving weekend, they married at the National Archives in Washington D.C., becoming the first couple in history to exchange vows in that building, standing in front of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights, with their six combined children present. No formal invitations were sent, vendors were not told the names of the bride and groom, and guests were not told the location of the reception at French bistro Chez Billy Sud until that very evening. Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings officiated, and Mika walked in to Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba wearing a lace Milly gown, greeting Joe in the center of the rotunda with the documents that shaped the country they had spent years discussing every morning standing as silent witnesses behind them.
