This one isn’t with us at the North Pole, but it does show how quickly these baby reindeer start moving and getting into trouble! The elves and I always have our hands full with the calves.

Not all reindeer migrate, but those that do can travel farther than any other migrating terrestrial mammal. Some reindeer travel over 3,100 miles per year, going an average of 23 miles per day!

Interesting information about reindeer

A reindeer’s thick fur keeps it well insulated, but that’s not the only way these animals stay warm through harsh Arctic winters. Their noses play a major role too—helping them hold onto both heat and precious moisture.

A reindeer’s snout is a complex structure of cartilage, bone, soft tissue, mucus membranes, and a dense network of blood vessels. Inside, the nasal passages have a large, folded surface area that allows plenty of space for heat and water to transfer between the inhaled air and the warm nasal walls.

The colder the air becomes, the more efficiently the reindeer nose works. As air moves through the nasal passages, it warms up and picks up moisture. Scientists describe the tiny energy losses from this process as “entropy production.” Remarkably, the reindeer nose keeps this energy loss nearly uniform, ensuring the animal gives up as little heat as possible with each breath.

Humans exhale visible clouds of steam in cold weather because we lose a lot of heat and moisture with every breath. Reindeer, on the other hand, release almost no visible vapor—even in extreme cold—thanks to their expertly engineered Arctic noses.
