After his funeral on August 18, 1977, Elvis' body was initially placed in a crypt at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis. However, just 11 days later, a shocking incident occurred: three men attempted to steal Elvis' body. Their plan failed, and they were arrested and charged with trespassing.
This attempt to steal his body deeply distressed Elvis' father, Vernon Presley. Fearing for the safety of his son’s final resting place, Vernon sought approval from the Memphis City Adjustment Board to have Elvis and his mother, Gladys Presley, reburied at Graceland—their family home. On October 2, 1977, the bodies were relocated to the Meditation Garden behind Graceland.
Since then, Graceland has become not only the place where Elvis lived but also his final resting place—a serene sanctuary where fans from around the world come to pay their respects and celebrate the legacy of the King of Rock and Roll.

Mrs. Nicholson was featured in the movie "This is Elvis," and loved to talk about her time with the King of Rock and Roll, whom she called "Mr. P". She would also say that Elvis was her white son because of the close relationship she had with him.
She was introduced to Elvis in the mid-1960s by a neighbor, Cleo Smith. "She knew my mother cooked well," her son, Ossie Jr. said. Elvis would sometimes talk with Mrs. Nicholson in the kitchen at Graceland, and when he learned in 1974 that her husband, Ossie Sr., was laid off, he hired him as a guard. She continued cooking for the Presley family after Elvis died and officially retired from the Graceland staff in 1990.
Periodically, Pauline would come out of retirement when asked by Priscilla or Lisa Presley to return to Graceland to cook for an after-tour-hours family meal. It made some of their special visits to Graceland seem like old times over the years. Pauline's last such "command performance" was when Priscilla and Lisa hosted a family dinner at Graceland during the Christmas season in 2004. Pauline, with assistance from her family, came through with a masterpiece of Southern tradition. Portions of the dinner event were shot for the new documentary Elvis By The Presleys.

As the story goes, the studio doctor put Elvis under the cap and he went in with a special instrument to retrieve the cap from Elvis's lung; apparently, the cap broke into two pieces, and the doctor had to repeat the procedure, but was able to successfully remove the pieces.
Upon his arrival at the studio, Colonel Parker became nearly apoplectic after hearing the news of the doctor having to spread Elvis' vocal chords in order to perform the procedure, realizing how it could have ended Elvis's singing career had the vocal chords been damaged.
During the filming of the 1957 film "Jailhouse Rock," after his pronounced body movements while dancing, Elvis showed nurse Beverly Altomare his teeth, where she noticed something odd. After examining them, the nurse discovered that one of them was missing a dental crown; it had come loose and could have become lodged in his throat. After examination, it was confirmed that the crown had lodged in the bronchial tube of his right lung, so he underwent a bronchoscopy to remove it.
