New barrelhead painting by Darcie! It's up in Bing's Barn- which is also air-conditioned! Perfect place to sip wine and relax on a hot day like today.

Darcie's notes on painting this one are a fun snapshot of her artistic process:

"I was really struggling with this painting: getting it too literal, but having troubles finding the color and movement. Raven was blue shades and background pale yellow When I sat down I asked for help from my artist angels and all of a sudden it just started happening. I brought deeper colors into the pale yellow background and then I found the colors in the raven. It was an amazing afternoon."

This barrel head painting is available for sale. The full price is $1700. Club members get our friends and family discount for $850.

Having such a wonderful time at 's and 's "Wine Down in the Grove!" Pairing with charcuterie boat- we're in love!

Such a sweet event, and it was so much fun to be in the midst of great people, amazing wineries and creators of absolute scrumptious food.
, Bluebird Chocolates, and of course and Charming Fig-- such amazing company! Loved getting to taste the great things we are all making!

And for what a great cause! From their website: The LARPD Foundation is hosting a fundraiser in Sycamore Grove Park to advance our community support program. This program is vital to the Livermore community, providing financial assistance to those in need allowing them the opportunity to join in LARPD programs such as summer camps, swim lessons, and senior activities.
Each ticket sold funds one more scholarship providing a child the opportunity to learn a valuable life skill, experience the beauty of nature, or allow a senior the chance to grow their community.

Looking for some artistic inspiration? Come visit us, and see Darcie's newest pieces of art.

Julian, our winemaker, gave Darcie a huge stack of barrelheads from our oldest barrels, now too old to use. She's been busy at work, treating them like canvases. Darcie loves how the barrelhead connects her painting to wine country on an additional level, and makes use of something that might otherwise be thrown away.

Although who are we kidding? Old barrels are all the rage! You can find some of our older barrels kicking around at Altamont, and some provide a nice backdrop in front of Bing's Barn. We have light fixtures and sculptures created by Noel Sewall out of old barrel bindings as well!

This painting depicts Madden Ranch vineyard all aglow during a fall sunset.

Ladybug circle. Photo by Darcie.

Yes, there are still a good amount of ladybugs at work in our vineyard! While we definitely saw a peak of them back in March, look around, and you'll find them patrolling the new shoots, out looking for aphids.

This one found a beautiful curlicue vine to explore.

Did you know that you can attend the Uncorked Awards banquet?

That's right, you can! It seems like something exclusive to wine industry professionals, but any local wine-lover is invited to buy tickets and come party!

We will be drinking the Best of Class winners from Livermore Wine Country, and the Best of Show wines will be announced. Great food, fun people, and wines that will knock your socks off.

We can't wait to get together with our team at this event, and celebrate the eight awards- and seven double golds- we won!

Livermore Valley Uncorked is run and presented by The Tri-Valley Conservancy. They do so much amazing work in our valley, for farms, vineyards, and our natural open spaces.

May flowers are here! (We sure did have our April showers.)

Darcie took these photos in our Chardonnay vineyard, home of our buttery DeMayo Chardonnay. You might need to squint. Grape flowers are really, really tiny!

Vines self-pollinate, but that doesn't mean that it's a sure thing. Pollination is a delicate process, and even a bit of wind or rain can halt it. We hope that our vineyards have some gentle days ahead.

As spring turns to summer, every successfully pollinated flower will become a single grape.

Happy Mother's Day, everyone!

As we wrap up Mother's Day, we hope every mother got to have a moment of celebration, peace, and relaxation today.

For Darcie's part, she celebrated at the Giants Game with her youngest Amanda, and had a fun phone call with Kailyn up in Oregon. What a great day with family, both near and far.

New painting by Darcie! And can you guess who-HOO it depicts? Our resident baby owl!

This painting is on display at the winery right now, but we don't expect it to be around for long. Paintings this beautiful (and sweet) tend to get swiped up fast. We'll be sad to see it go, and hope it finds a

So come down and taste this Sunday, and enjoy the new art while you can!

Here's Darcie's note:

"Great Horned Owlet:" This baby dropped out of our Eucalyptus Tree. Lindsay Wildlife checked it over and then brought it back to reunite with its family. That is why I am donating 100% of the proceeds from this painting to Lindsey Wildlife.

These Vineyard scenes are painted on the heads of our wine barrels that are no longer in wine production. The wood grain, stain from the grapes and barrel stamps contribute to their uniqueness.

Vineyard views are waiting for you!

You can book your tasting via the link in our business page, or just drive on in!

Some things to enjoy while you're here:
1. Take a selfie (or even just a gander) at our panoramic mirror. It's really cool how it extends the view!

2. New paintings by Darcie.

3. The vines have leafed out. It feels so wonderful to be surrounded by green leaves as the hills turn their iconic golden color with the warmer days.

4. Try our new tasting menu, based on the Quarter 2 release wines. It features our Double Gold winner Petit Verdot.

Morning fog rolling in over the Petit Verdot vineyard.

We've grown Petit Verdot for as long as we've grown Cab Franc and Malbec. So why is this year the first year we've bottled it? Well, it took a long time to really find it's feet (or roots?)

As baby vines, our Petit was incredibly ambitious. It reminded us of a fifth grader reading Dostoevsky! It produced so many clusters of grapes, but couldn't ripen them. We pruned them back a lot, and dropped a lot of fruit. Still, Petit is an incredibly intense grape with a lot of acidity and spice, perfume and incense characters. We included small amounts of it in our Bordeaux blend.

The 2019, however, was the vintage where we said "wow!" Our little show-off has achieved an incredible balance of acid, flavor, body and tannin. Our Petit just won Double Gold at the Livermore Valley Uncorked, and we were pleased to release it as part of Quarter 2 last weekend.

Come on down and give it a swirl and a sip. It is currently on our tasting menu. Our Petit is waiting for you!

A few photos from our Club Release party last weekend!

What a lovely time it was~ and Amanda's shiba inu, Sasha, really enjoyed working behind the EOV table!

Téa Noelle's music and the summery weather created a wonderful, relaxing vibe during the daytime. On Saturday night, Michelle Lambert kicked things into higher gear with a fun set of her original music. (Don't miss her upcoming show at Almost Famous on May 13th!) The food and wine pairings, curated and prepared by Zephyr Grill and Bar, whisked us away to far off places, like the Iberian peninsula, Morocco.

Their white chocolate fudge, paired with our just released Victories Rosé, re-defined what kind of pairings you can do with a dry rosé!

Thank you to all our club members, near and far! Shipping members, your wine should be coming to you soon! Thank you for your continued support of our family business.

And if you're not a member, but would like to join, you can sign up online! The link to our website is in our bio.

Our resident baby great horned owl.

Last week, this fledgling fell out of her nest in the gigantic eucalyptus tree at the front of our property. (Shown at its puffiest, in the last photo.) It's normal for owls to nest there every year-- you can call it the valley's most natural and beautiful owl box! But it's common for the babies to fall out as well, and this hasn't been our first time owl sitting.

The owlet is getting a much better handle on her wings and flying skills since. The first three photos show her up in the peppertree. She proudly flew there herself.

We look forward to her spreading her wings in earnest, and helping us out with those pesky ground squirrels!

All these photos are by Darcie. Impressive, right?

Let's take a virtual vineyard walk, and take a look at some of the things we do to celebrate- and protect- the natural world.

First off, the solar panels. Did you know that we supply 100% of our winery's energy needs with those solar panels in dry years, and close to 100% in rainier years?

You can see our solar panels as soon as you drive into Darcie Kent Estate Winery, up on the ridgeline behind the West and East Hills vineyards and Bing's Barn. This hill catches a lot of light, since it is pointed SW. The grapes take advantage of it too, and we've planted heat-resistant Cabernet Sauvignon up there, which make our biggest, boldest wines.

Have you ever wondered what those strange white boxes are, up mounted on posts? They're owl boxes! Owls and other raptors help us manage pests in a natural way. We also net our vineyards to prevent damage from deer, ground squirrels, and invasive starlings in a gentle and humane way. Last year, Wood Family and ourselves put up a deer fence too.

Owls aren't the only birds helping us out: look out for our chicken tractor in the head-pruned Grenache Noir vineyards. One of the gentlest ways to till and fertilize vineyard soil is with chickens. The little hens peck and claw at the dirt while they gobble up weeds and grasses, and they leave behind a natural fertilizer in their wake.

As a final note, we take water conservation really seriously. All of our landscaping is certified drought resistant, and we take special measures to steam our barrels, rather than clean them with water. Steaming barrels uses only one cup of water, compared to the eighteen gallons of liquid water you'd need to use otherwise.

Thank you for taking this walk with us! Come on by and see what we're up to in person! We're open for tastings Wednesday through Sunday.

Today's featured winery leading up to our Uncorked competition comes with quite a lot of history!

Darcie Kent Estate Winery is a fifth-generation vintner and artist, whose wine-growing roots go back to the Swiss Alps and the pioneering of winemaking in America. Darcie’s great, great grandfather, Fritz R. Ruegsegger, came to America with his family from Switzerland in 1875 to pursue a career in winemaking.

In 1883, Fritz’s son and Darcie’s great grandfather, Christian Ruegsegger started his own winery, the Alpine Winery, in St. Joseph, Missouri, which held bond #62 in the United States.

With the close of the Alpine Winery, Darcie is determined to restart the family legacy in California with her husband David, and two daughters, Kailyn and Amanda.

Today, Darcie Kent Estate Winery specializes in the growing and bottling of Bordeaux and Burgundy-style wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.

Legacy in a Glass is proud to represent Darcie Kent Vineyards, a producer of world-class, vineyard-focused wines from very particular vineyards in the Central Coast of California. 5th generation vintner and artist Darcie Kent paints each label, and runs the winery with her two daughters, Amanda and Kailyn Kent, 6th generation.

To give you a great example of the kinds of wines they produce, their 2016 Firepit Red earned 90 points by Wine Enthusiast in 2019. This red blend gets its name from the firepit that sits in the center of Darcie Kent's Crown Block estate vineyard. Surrounding the firepit are old vine Merlot, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, and newer plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Malbec. These varietals are the essence of Darcie Kent's Firepit Red, delivering a wine carefully crafted to satisfy everyone's palate.

Darcie Kent's 2016 Firepit Red was previously quoted at $40 per bottle, but is now available at select Fine Wines and Good Spirits for $19.99!
