WAS DOLLY PARTON A CHRISTIAN? [Disclaimer: Because Parton was so beloved, I made no commentary in this post but only quoted other sources.]

Dolly Parton’s maternal grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher at a small “House of Prayer” church and she grew up singing gospel hymns, attending frequent services (including prayer meetings), and absorbed the message that “through God all things are possible” and that “Jesus loves me.”

She began performing in church as a young girl and later recorded many faith-based songs, such as “The Seeker,” “He’s Alive,” and gospel albums.

She told Tony Rossi, of The Christopher Blog podcast in 2020 that “God is my co-writer and my co-pilot. Anything that I do, I always keep God first and foremost because I feel like that’s where I draw my strength…

She described finding God personally as a teenager in an abandoned church, experiencing a sense of peace and purpose after praying earnestly to be shown, helped, and saved.

She told Kelsey Goeres of the “Showbiz CheatSheet” in 2021, about her song, “The Seeker,”: “I tell you, that’s a song I love. I do believe, I know there is a God and He is still the best friend I got in the world. I talk to Him often, but I’m one of the world’s sinners.

“I think I’m a vanilla sinner—too bad to be good and too good to be bad. Because it wouldn’t be all that hard to be good but I just don’t know that I want to be. I think I won’t have no fun if I’m too good.

“But I had some friends that had just been renewed and they were real happy about it and so religion was real heavy on my mind. I just could not decide whether I wanted to be a Christian or not.”

In the end, Parton declared that she’s “certainly not a Christian.”

“I will try some of anything, I mean I will,” she said. But Christianity wasn’t for her.

Today, Parton says she’s “not that religious. But I’m very, very spiritual,” she wrote in her 2020 book, Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics.

Dr. Albert Mohler said this on his podcast “The Briefing” today:

“She was often described by a publicist as a Christian. But in terms of her understanding of Christianity, in her own words, she said she was more spiritual than religious, which is another way of saying, I think Christianity was a big part of the background of how she saw the world and the narratives and the music she sang.

“But she was not very explicit, let's just say, in terms of her Christian testimony. And basically avoided references of any substance throughout her life.”

GOD REPAIRS THAT WHICH IS BROKEN.

Nehemiah saw that the walls of Jerusalem needed repair, so he set out to get it done.

God uses people to fix that which is broken, too.

When you came to Jesus, did you come to him whole, or were you damaged goods?

Has the Lord since been good to you? Are you different now?

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

If you are in a dark place, broken, despairing, remember this: God is still working.

Spurgeon says, “The greenest grass is found wherever the most rain falls. Oh believer, do not say that the sun is burned out, just because a cloud has hidden it.

“When God hides his face from you, do not say that he has forgotten you. He’s simply waiting for a little while to make you love him more. And once he comes, you will rejoice with the inexpressible “joy of the Lord.” (Nehemiah 8:10)

Remember what Jesus said to Peter before his thrice denial: “And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32)

There’s purpose in brokenness: God wants to show you his faithfulness so you will be strong enough to persevere through the next test, so that you can help others when they go through it.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Then you, too, will be called the “Repairer of Broken Walls.” (Isaiah 58:12)

TOMORROW ALWAYS COMES.

In the Lord, it’s always better the next morning. Why? We are that much closer to Heaven where we won’t have to suffer darkness any longer.

“There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.” (Revelation 22:5)

Maybe you’re going through a dark night of the soul. There’s some good news: “Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.” (Psalms 112:4)

Just wait. Be patient. He knows where you are, what happened, and what you need.

“I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths….” (Psalms 30:1)

Praise Him now. In advance. By faith.

He did it before and he’ll do it again. If he helped you once, will he stop helping you?? Of course not!

“Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.” (Psalms 30:2)

He’s not deaf to our pleas nor blind to our problems. But ya gotta believe!

“…weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” (Psalms 30:5)

Our Dayspring, the Bright Morning Star, the Light of the world, is there.

Tomorrow.

The day after.

Yesterday and forever.

What will your tombstone say?

21 years ago, my life changed when I met Ray Comfort. I felt I was born again, again, after he taught "Hell's Best Kept Secret."

It lit a fire in me for evangelizing the lost that has only increased over time.
