My passion is photo editing, sometimes by commission, sometimes on contingency, but mostly because I can. A natural piece of art, “Balanced Rock”, is an enormous roadside sandstone boulder. Located near the southern entrance to the Garden of the Gods, the sandstone boulder is 35 feet tall and weighs 1.4 million pounds; it begs to be photographed. In 1910, the rock was reinforced with a concrete base to help preserve it.

Baseball and photography both revolve around anticipation, timing, and geometry. My 15-year-old grandson swings his bat at the precise spot where he expects the ball to arrive. I press the shutter, anticipating the exact moment just before the bat and ball collide. We don’t do this until we get it right; we practice until we can’t get it wrong.

A male mallard (drake). Mallards are famous for breeding with at least 40 other duck species. They also sleep with one eye, resting one half of their brain at a time, allowing them to keep one eye open and remain fully alert for predators.
