Some folks bring a lunch to work. I bring a stack of typing paper.

Right here in Lexington, a lot of Black Man got planned in the front seat of my company car. On a good day I can rough out about five pages that way. The sketches are crude, with stick arms and dialogue squeezed into the corners, but they hold the whole story like a map holds a road trip.

Then I go home and ink the real page by hand. I scan it in, and I color it on the computer last. One page a day until it's done.

Is it slow? Yep. Like a porch swing on a summer night. And I love every doggone minute of it.

If you've got a dream tucked behind a busy work week, a few minutes a day add up. One day at a time, one step at a time.

Lexington friends, what's something you've built a little at a time, a garden, a quilt, a car? Tell me about it in the comments. 👇

Come see the books in person at The Comic Interlude on Waller Ave, Saturday, Oct 24 at noon.

Back in 2008, I went to a church event right here in Lexington. They put on a play that day, and through that play I heard the gospel for the first time. Truly heard it. ❤️

Art had already been working on me for years, softening my heart like rain on hard dirt. That play is when the seed went in.

That's the reason Black Man exists.

It's the story of a boy who gets superpowers, and the first thing he wants is to go after the father who hurt him. Then he starts seeing shadowy figures. They lead him to a hidden realm where powerful forces are pulling strings to break into our world.

I want y'all to feel what I felt in 2008, when a story reached right into my heart and stayed there.

And if you've got a story you've been sitting on, tell it. Somebody out there needs it.

Lexington friends, has a play, a song, or a movie ever moved you like that? I'd love to hear your story in the comments. 🙏

The concept of 'should' doesn't exist, much like the Easter Bunny or politicians who aren't sociopaths. God loves everyone, and restoration is possible. Focus on what *is*, not what *should be*. Embrace reality.

When something truly unique sparks in art or culture, the industry often rushes to copy it. This imitation dilutes the originality, leading to an oversaturated and average landscape. True innovation lies in daring to be different, not in following the crowd.

We pay for non-average experiences daily. So why, as an artist, would you aim for average? You have the power to fill market gaps. Create what you want to see and hear because you are the response the world needs.

Every artist has a starting line. Mine is sitting in an old shoebox. 📦

I made my very first book in fourth grade. Then in seventh grade, I started my big epic in a spiral notebook. Pictures on the top of the page. Story on the bottom. I packed it with ideas from Power Rangers, Fatal Fury, and Dragon Ball Z.

I lost that notebook for almost two years! When I found it, my art style took a big turn. I kept the story going in thick 180 sheet notebooks until my freshman year of college. It landed at over 900 pages. All one book!

Those notebooks stack up in that box like rings in a tree. Each one shows how I grew. And my brain still works that way. I love a long project.

That old epic stayed a giant rough draft. Black Man made it all the way to print. Today that kid has a real printed comic in his hands: Black Man: Tribes, Words, and Blood, Volume 1 of 25.

Friends, do you still have old art from when you were a kid? Drop a comment and tell me what it was like digging it back up 👇

Don't panic about AI taking over. Instead, become a specialist. Human ingenuity and engineering will always be valued over purely AI-generated projects. Your unique skills are irreplaceable.

Is learning to prompt AI the same level of suffering and skill as an artist learning to draw? Many feel it's disrespectful to equate the two. While prompting is a skillset, it doesn't match the depth of traditional art creation. The journey of an artist involves overcoming mental blocks, understanding shapes, contrasts, and countless revisions. AI prompting, while a skill, has a different gap and won't be appreciated in the same way.

Well, howdy. Let me tell you a quick story.

The first time I printed Black Man, I stood over those boxes and wondered if anybody would care. They sold out.

Second batch. Same story. Gone.

So this is batch three. 27 regular editions and 17 signed special editions sitting in my house right now. The momentum keeps building and I'm grateful.

Black Man: Tribes Words and Blood. A young brother gets powers and his first thought is finding the man who hurt him. Written and drawn by me.
