“Long Gone” This one came from a meme. People kept sending me this similar meme that said “one day you’ll pick your kid up for the last time and you won’t know it.” One thing Brooks will still come up and say is “dad, toss me up” over and over again so I thought that was a great opening line for this song. “Hey Stranger” is something my Pappaw would jokingly say when he hadn’t seen me in awhile. It became our thing when I’d come home to visit from being out on the road.

As he got older, his mind started to go, and he eventually ended up in the memory care unit at an assisted living facility. I was always nervous to go visit him because I was scared he wouldn’t recognize me. Thankfully, it only happened maybe a couple times where he thought I was my dad, but he’d still say “hey stranger” when I walked in. Whether he knew me or not, hearing that still made me feel good.

To anyone out there dealing with that, I feel your pain and I hope this song can bring you a little peace.
