Pig Penny Pig Pennies are elongated coins I make to help promote my hometown of Lexington, NC, and the World Famous BBQ we are known for.

Pig Penny was founded in 2007 by Lexington, North Carolina entrepreneur, collector, and Army veteran, Dwayne Padon. Dwayne is a tireless advocate for local small businesses and came up with Pig Penny as a way to promote local businesses as well as his hometown. Dwayne teams up with his mother, Don Rea Padon, who is credited with the artwork for the annual Pig Penny releases.

Congrats to my man Eric Clinard of Mint Hill, NC for winning the first Pig Penny Challenge of 2026. He won the Penny book produced by the Lexington Souvenir Shoppe. Hope he will enjoy this bonus coin, the second part of the contest: a 2001 NC State Quarter “First Flight” with the stained back. It is my favorite so far of any stained back I have done. He will also receive another, yet to be determined, bonus coin for completing the third section of the Pig Penny challenge. Also, a big shout-out to Eric for being one of the most engaged followers of this page. Sometimes it pays to follow your favorite pages closely. Thank you all whose continued interest in the Pig Pennies makes it all worthwhile.

Running nearly a week behind on the staining updates. Minor injuries and being sick as heck for a few days slowed the progress down. Anyway, here are the quarters after staining, rolling, and polishing. Now I know why I did not stain any coins for many years. Labor-intensive, to say the least. These basic scans do not do the actual results justice. I love them all, but guess the NC Quarters honoring the Wright Brothers’ “First Flight” are my favorite. Anyway, some of these will be the prizes for some of the Pig Penny Challenge games that have already taken place, and maybe some games yet to come… Stay tuned.

Many of you may know this story, but I have to share it again. My former coworker Bobby Cope’s son Dalton became the very first kid to see the Pig Pennies in September 2007, weeks before they hit the market. Stressed out after investing a ton of money on the penny machine, getting the dies engraved, the printing of the packaging paper, banners, signs, etc. I was not even sure the coins would be a hit. Then I showed Dalton the first 3 coins I had made. His smile and laughter, and the way his face lit up when he first saw them, lifted such an enormous weight off my mind that you just would not know. I will always appreciate Dalton’s reaction and gift to me. For that, Dalton Cope gets the first packaged coin I produce every year. As he and Bobby know, he will always get them too as long as he’ll have them. I can never repay him for what he gave me, but I always want him to know how much I needed and appreciated his reaction. Thank you, Dalton, as always! Shown here with his 2026 Pig Penny. (Photo by Bobby Cope.)

To whoever sent this…thank you 🥹🫶 No note. No name. Just a gift for the pigs.
Maybe it was allowance money, maybe it was simply someone who wanted to help, we may never know. But what we do know is that every single dollar makes a difference!
No act of generosity is ever too small. Every donation helps us feed, care for, and provide for the pigs who depend on us each day.
So, to our mystery donor: thank you for thinking of our piggies and sharing what you had with them. It means more than you know! 💞

OK, here are the first basic results from staining the coins. These are nickels because the machine was still set to roll nickels. Top coin is fresh out of the machine. The bottom coin looked just like it, until I cleaned the front of the coin, and the cleaner basically removed the stain on the back, too. But silver-toned ghosting is still very visible on the back… Both nickels were pretty clean pocket-change coins. Not 100% happy with the results so far, but it’s a starting point.

Been toying around with the thoughts of staining some coins for the first time in maybe 15 years or more. Need to create some special rolls as prizes for participants in the first Pig Penny Challenge of 2026, so today I just grabbed a bunch of coins and stained them. I’m letting them dry for a couple of days, and we will see what the results may be. I’ve always heard this referred to as “ghosting,” leaving the original coin’s image showing prominently on the back. Are there any ghosting fans out there? I know if you own any Pig Penny coin that features staining on a prior design. You have a rare variation for sure. All I know is it’s all Andrea Diskin’s fault for asking for a ghosted Lincoln on the back of her to be delivered 2026 Pig Penny.

Oh, and what the heck… The first person to comment “I want a 2026 ghosted Lincoln” from the Pig Penny page, and each of the other elongated coin pages I just shared this post to, will win one of these (good, bad or indifferent of the results of how they turn out). Just checking on who reads posts all the way to the end… Who is in?
