On Edward Pramuk at 90....

The Ode to Zurbaran will warm you like a campground fire.

Naked ladies near the Baldwin find a place in your dreams.

Hard edges and the Push Pull of color
Oh! The spaces created.
Torn paper.

Cliffs of ice creep near the gulf shore,
cold funeral pyres and a solitary moon.

Icons of rambling notes of jointed tunes.

Once Georgia O’Keeffe painted the poppy, no one else could paint a poppy.
So Ed strokes out and now he owns Yellow.
Bastard.
I wanted to paint with Yellow.

I did, but it’s not his Yellow. His Yellow is better.

The painter takes a walk in the twilight near the lake.
And now he will own that too.
Damn.

Who knew that while dancing his two-step he was continually one-step.
One step ahead of us all.

The event commemorating the second anniversary of the Tiger Island Fire drew several hundred people from across the state. In addition to inviting photographer Rickie Smith and I to participate with our work, the museum involved an original bluegrass piece performed by local musicians and poetry written about the fire.

It was great seeing the Arts in the forefront of this event to express the emotion of the community. I quoted Robert Henri from "The Art Spirit":

"Painting is the expression of ideas in their permanent form. It is the giving of evidence. It is the study of our lives. The American who is useful as an artist is one who studies his own life and records his experiences, in this way he gives evidence. If a man has something to say he will find a way of saying it.

What is the relationship of the artist to the community? What good does a man's art do? There are those in the community who regard the artist as a mere entertainer to amuse and perform graces before a paying public. The true artist regards his work as a means of talking with men, of saying his say to himself and to others.

Art in the community has a subtle, unconscious, refining influence. "
