Black Art, Culture & Education’s Community Learning Center (BACE CLC) is proud to participate in the DeKalb County Summer Food Service Program to ensure our youth continue receiving healthy meals throughout the summer.

FREE meals are available for children & teens 18 and under.

Starting Monday, June 8th - Friday, July 17th

The BACE Summer STEAM Program blends science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics with history and culture, Spanish language learning, civic education, financial literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression.

Ages: 5 to 17
Schedule: Monday through Friday
Hours: 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Location: 3560 Panthersville Rd., Decatur, GA 30034

* Hands-on STEAM projects

This is a full-day, structured youth development program designed with best practices in mind, including active supervision, predictable routines, community-building, movement, project-based learning, and family communication.

We had the honor of sitting in conversation with Basil Watson, and it was powerful!

Hearing him speak about his journey from Kingston to shaping global monuments grounded us in purpose. He shared how art holds memory, how discipline shapes greatness, and how Black artists of the diaspora carry both responsibility and vision.

This interview was a moment of artistic truth, legacy, learning, & love.

There are moments when you step into a space and feel the fullness of the diaspora speaking back to you. That is what it felt like walking into the studio of Basil Watson.

At Black Art, Culture, & Education, we understand that Black art travels. It carries memory across oceans, across generations, across borders. Basil Watson embodies that truth.

Born in Kingston, he was shaped by the cultural, political, and spiritual landscape of Jamaica. His early training at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts grounded him in discipline and craft, and his journey carried him into global spaces where his work now stands as public testimony. His sculptures live in cities across the United States, the Caribbean, and beyond, honoring freedom fighters, cultural icons, and the sacred humanity of Black people. And you can feel that lineage in his work.

His sculptures move with us. They carry the weight of history and the breath of the present. They reflect a diasporic identity that is rooted, expansive, and alive. This is what it means to be a Black artist of the diaspora, to hold Jamaica in your spirit while shaping the world with your hands.

Spending time with him, listening and learning, made it clear that his work is more than form. It is cultural memory. It is resistance. It is affirmation.

This visit deepened our commitment. Our students deserve to experience artists like Basil Watson, artists who show them that their stories matter globally, that their identities are powerful, and that their creativity can shape the world.

At the Black Art, Culture, and Education (BACE) gathering at the Hooper Renwick Museum and Library, we sat in the presence of living history.

Listening to the living legend Rubye Neal, a former student of Hooper Renwick, share her story brought the room into a sacred kind of quiet. Every word held lived experience, courage, and the wisdom of a generation that carried our communities forward through strength and vision.

The conversation, thoughtfully guided by Marlene Taylor Crawford, created space for reflection, truth, and deep learning. Moments like this remind us that history lives through the voices of those who walked it.

Teaching historical truth matters. Sharing the full story of our past matters. When young people hear these stories, they gain clarity, pride, and the strength to carry culture forward with dignity and purpose.

Our youth deserve to know Black history. Our youth deserve to celebrate Black culture. And gatherings like this ensure that the legacy of places like Hooper Renwick continues to live, breathe, and teach.
