There’s no right way to drop a drink, but if you want to photograph your favorite going for the ride of its life, you use a pneumatic actuator. Essentially, a robotic table pulses up and down while we’re photographing, allowing us to capture a cocktail, beer, and more frozen in free fall with all their garnishes.

An African leopard rests on the ground, its spotted coat blending in with the grass. Taken during a rare vulnerable moment while on safari in Botswana, this photo by Nathan shows the elegance and stealth of one of nature’s most elusive predators. Leopards live solitary lives—unlike social lions in their prides. Instead, leopards have their own territories and rarely interact. Despite their size, leopards face threats from other large predators, including lions and hyenas, which will steal their kills. These adept climbers seek sanctuary in trees, which is where this leopard was just before this photo was taken. You can see that it’s not fully relaxed, keeping its eyes fixed on the camera, carefully tracking the surroundings.

A herd of zebras gather at a large water hole in Botswana to quench their thirst. The reflection of the sky and surrounding landscape in the water captures a hushed moment of respite in the wild. Water holes resemble a busy train station, with groups of different animals coming and going at all hours of the day and night—there were about 200 zebras in the area this day. Predators often lurk nearby, sometimes waiting for a hydration break, or at other times, to ambush prey, making these spots both vital and dangerous.

As the sun sets in Botswana, a family of elephants makes its way across the savanna through a low fog. Nathan waited for hours while photographing on safari to get this picture of the herd trumpeting at last light. The result captures the tranquility of the moment as these majestic giants move at a calm and deliberate pace. The warm, golden light of dusk highlights their silhouettes, evoking a peaceful transition from day to night.

Elephants live in matriarchal herds. They’re incredibly intelligent and social—they can form deep bonds that span many years. Elephants are also sophisticated, multisensory communicators that use vocalizations, expressions, gestures, touch, and scent to convey messages to other elephants. They’re even able to communicate with each other across distances as great as 10 kilometers by producing low-frequency, infrasonic calls. Inaudible to humans, these rumbles travel through the air and seismically through the ground.

Photographed on safari in Tanzania, a young male lion stands tall and proud, exuding a calm confidence. At this point in his life, his mane is short and his face is lightly scarred. Taken from 20 yards away, this breathtaking portrait captures a tranquil moment in this lion’s life, which will be shaped by what’s to come. Lions are the only big cats that live in social groups. His role, like other male lions in this position, is to protect his pride and territory from threats, which are constant.

This macrophotograph of a translucent, razor-thin slice of watermelon practically looks like an x-ray of the vine-ripened fruit. The embodiment of summer, its distinctive pinky-red interior and bright green rind seem to glow, save for a single black seed. Capturing this contrast was more difficult than you might imagine, but for a surprising reason: seeded varieties are increasingly difficult to find, which lead to multiple trips across Seattle to find the perfect melon.
