This past weekend Clark County Public Arts and Clark County Poet Laureate Ashley “Ms AyeVee” Vargas hosted an EK workshop at the Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum. We had an amazing time being amongst the decades of Rita’s art and creating poetic verse inspired by the experience. Thank you so much to the RDA staff for having us and we can’t wait to come back!

The Stardust Hotel first opened on the Las Vegas strip in 1958 and was part of the iconic skyline until it closed in 2006. In classic Vegas fashion, it imploded in a blaze of fireworks and fanfare on March 13th, 2007 at 2:34am.

But, that’s not where the story of the Stardust ends. The same year the hotel was imploded, Clark County Public Arts undertook a project to install sculptural artwork along the Flamingo Arroyo Trail in Clark County.

Designed and constructed by a team of three artists, Barbara Grygutis, Buster Simpson, and Kevin Berry, the pieces were intended to be a marriage of form and function by both adding artwork to the trail and also providing shade from the desert sun for hikers.

The project was officially completed in 2010 and includes fabricated metal, desert flora, and parts of the actual Stardust Hotel! This piece can be found at the Pecos-McLeod trailhead.

Follow along for me public art in Clark County!

Join local Clark County poet AA Monet for our August Inkwell workshop titled “The 5 Senses of Storytelling.” All ages/experience levels welcome!

This interactive workshop, The 5 Senses of Storytelling, takes you on a 3-act journey of noticing the 5 senses, creating a poem, and discovering the power of intention versus interpretation. Using a short silent film as inspiration, you'll gather sensory details to transform into an original poem before experiencing the scene again with sound. No previous writing experience is necessary. Come ready to explore the many meanings a single story can hold!
