The name Southroad Connection may not ring a bell to many, but the band was capable of delivering quality R&B, Funk & Boogie. They never experienced massive success, but they released three albums during their run. This, their third and final album, had positive vibes and bright musical moments. πŸ’›

Check out the songs: "Positive Energy", "Just Let Me Know", "I Can't Say No, If You Ask Me" & "It's Got To Be Good".

With this 1985 release, Melba Moore found herself in the middle of a musical identity crisis. It was unclear which audience she was trying to satisfy. There were strong elements of Pop, Rock and a little R&B. The lead single & title track left R&B listeners out in the cold, but it did garner a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. She also included a surprisingly pleasant cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams", but it did not reach her core audience. "King Of My Heart" bore a striking resemblance to Billy Ocean's "Caribbean Queen", which left some puzzled. She attempted to throw her R&B fans a bone with "When You Love Me Like This" (featuring Lillo Thomas) and "To Those Who Wait", but it was not enough to rescue this sinking ship. While it was not a bad album, it just wasn't the album her fan base wanted. What held it together was that voice. That voice made every moment worth listening. πŸ–€

Check out the songs: "When You Love Me Like This", "To Those Who Wait" & "Love Of A Lifetime".

Even though I am a life-long Chaka Khan fan, and even though this was the biggest solo album of her career, I was not a fan of this album when it was released. I felt it was over-produced and too electronic. It took me years to connect to it. What I initially missed was the "fusion" quality of the project, which is something Chaka was known for implementing into her work. While there are still one or two songs I can do without, it's solid work from Queen Chaka. πŸ–€

Check out the songs: "Eye To Eye", "Through The Fire", "This Is My Night" & "Stronger Than Before".

Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Singer, Songwriter & Producer David Lasley, spent his formative years in Detroit, developing his musical identity and honing his craft. He was a "whyte boy" soaking up Motown and all forms of Soul Music. His name was a hidden gem in the industry, but his contributions were not. He was a hard-working session singer, who was sought after by the best & biggest in the business. His songwriting credits include Chaka's Khan's "Roll Me Through The Rushes", Anita Baker's "You Bring Me Joy", "Patti LaBelle's "Come What May" and Maxine Nightingale's "Lead Me On". "Missin' Twenty Grand", his debut album, was critically acclaimed, but commercially ignored. The title refers to "The 20 Grand", a Detroit club where he would frequently perform. The album was filled with Soulful Pop, 60's inspired melodies & jazzy moments that complemented his soaring falsetto. Background vocalists included Bonnie Raitt and Luther Vandross. He and Luther would frequently work together. The album is a true treasure. πŸ–€

Check out the songs: "Got To Find Love", "Where Is Charlie and Joanne", "On Third Street", "Take A Look" & "Never Say".

Singer-Songwriter-Musician Tashan never became a household name, but his musical catalog, albeit short, contained warm and soulful R&B of the day, with hints of classic Soul. With a voice similar to Christopher Williams, Tashan had all of the elements to be a force of nature in the business. "For The Sake Of Love" was his third album on Columbia Records. His previous release, 1989's "On The Horizon", featured the single "Black Man", which was a moderate hit for him. "For The Sake..." was expected to elevate him higher, but it fell on deaf ears stateside, but he attained a following in Europe. One of the album's highlights is his cover of "Tempted" by the band Squeeze. ❀

Check out the songs: "Been A Long Time", "Still In Love", "All I Ever Do", "Single And Lonely" & "Romantically Inspired".

Legacy & Lineage πŸ–€

The Marsalis family has left an indelible mark in the world of Jazz, and in music overall. Lead by patriarch Ellis Marsalis, an accomplished Pianist, who has twenty albums to his credit, and was a lead educator at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana, the Marsalis family moved mountains in the music world. Mr. Marsalis not only opened musical doors for decades of students, but also for his talented sons.

Eldest son Branford (saxophone), along with his next stairstep brother Wynton (trumpet), came into prominence in the early 1980’s, and were responsible for attracting a whole new audience to Jazz music. Brother Delfeayo came along in 1992 and became an award-winning Jazz Producer and Trombonist, while youngest recording brother Jason (drums) came in 1998, with eleven albums as a leader, and dozens as a sideman on projects by other Jazz artists.

Patriarch Ellis passed away in 2020 at the age of 85, due to complications of COVID-19. His sons continue to make music, educate and inspire other musicians, and lavish in the legacy they all helped to create. What a legacy it is. πŸ–€

Legacy & Lineage πŸ’œ

I'm so excited to hear the self-titled debut album from The Womack Sisters. The sisters' style and harmonies have captured the attention of music lovers worldwide.

Their mother and father are Cecil Womack (the brother to Bobby Womack) and Linda Cooke (the daughter of Sam Cooke), who make up the singing/writing duo Womack & Womack. They embody the musicality of their grandfather, uncle, mother & father. I look forward to experiencing their evolution and musical output.
