Theatre eXceptional aspires to create innovative theatre and performance art with, for, and about people with disabilities with the goal of addressing and eliminating the misconceptions and social stigmas so often placed upon these communities that inhibit their full acceptance into our society. Just as when our society excludes people with disabilities from playing a visible role in our communiti
es, so when we exclude artists with disabilities from playing a visible role in our industry, we as an art form miss out on an opportunity to create and collaborate with an entire generation of artists with profound talent and potential. In addition, these very artists are denied not only their right to express themselves through the performing arts, but also a venue in which to practice and perfect their craft. Through this collaboration, we hope to not only enrich the work we produce, but also the experience of all who participate. In addition to an annual fall play with a combined cast, we will also produce one large-scale musical each summer with a cast primarily with performers with disabilities. Alongside these two yearly productions, our staff of teaching artists has been hired by our city's Parks and Recreation Department to teach introductory theatre classes and devised theatre workshops for adult artists with disabilities, as well as instructional theatre therapy classes for professional artists and teachers interested in working with these populations. In the near future, we hope to develop a relationship with the public school system that will allow our teachers to go directly into the classroom to work with the kids and teenagers of our community on eliminating the social stigmas of disability.

The Fringe has given our performers a place to share their talents with new audiences and network with professional performers from all over the world.

Theatre eXceptional returns to the Tampa Fringe again! This time the local company is bringing Kiss Me, Shakes!:
Theatre eXceptional’s Advanced Musical Theatre and Shakespeare class team up to bring you the story of an egotistical actor and his ex-wife, who play Petruchio and Kate in a production of "Taming of the Shrew." On and off stage, they bicker and romance in a "battle of the sexes” while the drama unfolds with the cast and their newest, slightly menacing, ensemble members.
Theatre eXceptional’s advanced program trains actors with disabilities to prepare them for real-world professional experiences in the theatre space. In a creative collaboration, the Advanced Musical theatre class plays Fred, Lilli, and the Cast and Crew of “Taming of the Shrew” backstage while the Advanced Shakespeare class portrays their on-stage counterparts in this new take on the classic Cole Porter show-within-a-show musical based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, “Kiss Me, Kate.”

More info: The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a tale that follows the journey of a dreamer. Joseph is the son of Jacob and one of twelve brothers. He is given a coat of many colors by his father, which is symbolic of his favor and an object of his brother's jealousy.
The show is produced by Theatre eXceptional whose mission is to produce work for, about, and including people with disabilities. The show features 35 adult performers with disabilities who train year-round in the performing arts. The musical follows Joseph on a journey away from his family to unfamiliar lands where he learns to have faith in himself, his dreams, and in forgiveness.

More info: The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a tale that follows the journey of a dreamer. Joseph is the son of Jacob and one of twelve brothers. He is given a coat of many colors by his father, which is symbolic of his favor and an object of his brother's jealousy.
The show is produced by Theatre eXceptional whose mission is to produce work for, about, and including people with disabilities. The show features 35 adult performers with disabilities who train year-round in the performing arts. The musical follows Joseph on a journey away from his family to unfamiliar lands where he learns to have faith in himself, his dreams, and in forgiveness.

Theatre eXceptional celebrated another year of exceptional work in providing our special actors and artists with a place to develop and highlight their talents. Here is a small sample of Sunday evenings show.
This past weekend several of Sean's fellow thespians performed a musical play on the wives of Henry VIII called "SIX", since their were six wives. In honor of that event Sean did his rendition of an old Herman Hermits song entitled appropriately enough I'm Henry VIII I am". He kinda changes a couple of words to recognize his friends performance.
Sean wanted to share his Tribute to John Stamos with his Theatre eX friends. He loved the musical challenges we did last year at the height of the pandemic and wants to keep the music going...one video at a time.
Arts4All Florida was delighted to partner with Theatre Exceptional to create Florida’s first resource for both people with disabilities interested in working in theater and live entertainment AND theater and live entertainment organizations looking to hire and host people with disabilities and become more inclusive and accessible.
