When you have a document that you’d like to frame, it’s very important to consider the material it’s made from. In some cases, framing the document could cause it to age and deteriorate faster, so it’s a good idea to let a professional handle important documents.

It’s recommended that you periodically remove your art or photographs and clean your picture frames. However, make sure that you don’t put the picture back until the glass is completely dry, and the moisture can cause it to stick and end up damaging it.

How many boxes of photographs and family memorabilia do you have? Instead of keeping everything tucked away in a closet or storage shed, sort things out and have different items framed for all to see. It is ok to show off family members and their accomplishments.

If you want to draw the viewer’s eye inward, towards the picture, consider adding a fillet (aka slip). This is a decorative strip of molding set on or inside the frame. It can also serve a purely decorative function to improve the look of a plain frame.

Matting can be used as a means to create interesting patterns. Select a mat that covers the entire picture, and cut designs in key locations to reveal different concepts from the painting or picture. When you want a new look, insert new matting that has a different pattern.

If you’re going to be hanging a bunch or art pieces in a group, then there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Basically, groups of art look best when they are either framed totally consistently or when the frames are diverse yet complementary to one another.

In order to keep a poster or picture flat on the backing, and to keep air bubbles from rising, there are several different techniques for mounting it to the mat. The choices include wet or dry mounting, pressure-sensitive mounting, or spray adhesive mounting. The correct method depends on your plans for displaying the item.

To provide accent color or texture to a frame, a fillet can be added. This is a narrow strip of wood that’s placed on the molding or inside a mat opening and provides both depth and interest to the overall effect.

The type of art you are planning to frame is going to dictate the style of frame required. For instance, modern art works best with simple frames with clean lines, whereas more ornate frames complement traditional pieces.

Picture frames come in all shapes and sizes. If you don’t have a firm idea of where you’re going to hang your pictures, try to stick with a more conservative frame design, because it will be easier to place almost anywhere in your home.

When measuring the item you are having framed, be sure to subtract the proper amount for offset framing. For example, if the offset is ¼”, subtract ½” from the width and height dimensions ( ¼” from each side).

If you have a hallway with plenty of wall space, fill it with a Hall of Fame gallery of family members. Trace your family heritage with framed photographs assembled in chronological order along the wall.

When your child creates a work of art of which he or she is quite proud, enhance that important feeling of self-worth by framing the item. Use matting to add an extra touch, and watch your child’s face light up. You may even find it being wrapped and given to you as a special present.

Have you been thinking about taking your scissors to an oddly-sized poster to make your artwork fit into a ready-made frame? While this could be a solution if you’re really in a bind, your finished product will look better if you have a custom frame made for it.
