Growing up in the Philippines, I used to think that anyone living in USA was automatically rich. I mean, with 1 USD being worth 58 pesos, how could they not be? But now that I’m actually here, I see the reality—and it’s nothing like what I imagined.

Yes, we earn in dollars—but we also spend in dollars. Rent, food, utilities, insurance…EVERY ACTION REQUIRES MONEY. it all adds up fast. It’s not rare to see someone burning themselves out having 2 or 3 jobs just to catch up with the bills.

It breaks my heart when family or friends back home ask for help and I can’t say yes. Not because I don’t want to—but because I truly can’t. And I hope they understand that.

Living in the United States isn’t the glamorous life it’s made out to be. Sometimes, it’s just surviving—day by day, paycheck to paycheck. So if someone you love is here and can’t give, don’t take it as a lack of love. They might just be giving everything they have to stay afloat.
