Did you know our reenactment was registered under the National Park Services' National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom?

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom is a National Park Service program created in 1998 to honor, preserve, and promote the history of resistance to enslavement through preservation and education nationwide, advancing the idea that all people have the right to self-determination and freedom from oppression.

This program includes over 800 verified listings across multiple states, Washington D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and international locations.

Today in Underground Railroad History…
On this day in 1834, a committee of white laborers in Columbia holds a public meeting a week after riots targeting the town’s African American population. Among their proposed resolutions is an effort to force black property owners to sell their holdings and formation of a committee to return freedom seekers to their “rightful owners.” The efforts will amount to nothing; as noted by historian Leroy Hopkins: “Columbia Blacks showed resiliency and character which many white Columbians probably did not believe they possessed.”
