In the art classes I offer, I find it valuable to teach kids art skills beyond what they would typically receive in schools. But really, the best kind of things happen when you just get completey out of their way and let the kids make the magic as only children can.

Seriously considering hiring this kid to make me some Halloween wreaths because there is something so wild and amazing in her mind that comes out perfectly through this platform.
Summer Art 2020 ended today, but I’ll probably toss in a weekend workshop or two before school begins. I just can’t help myself.

Tomorrow marks the last day of 7 weeks of art camp I’ve held this summer. SEVEN WEEKS. We’ve painted, sculpted, woven, dreamed, spray painted, played. We’ve huddled under these tents to keep out of rainstorms. We’ve held onto a few of these tents as they attempted to blow away. We did it all with masks on our faces, and the inevitable paint smears on our masks. For a summer that started out with zero art camps for the entire first month, and considering I typically clock in 4 weeks during summer months, and also, considering we are in a global pandemic, it does make me a little emotional to think that it ends tomorrow. And that emotion is fatigue. Just kidding! Seriously, I feel so blessed, I feel humbled to be given this chance, and I feel excited to see what the future holds for my little art business. Thanks to all of you who have supported what I do. By investing your money into my art camps and classes, you are helping me to support my own family. For that, I am deeply, deeply grateful. Thank you.

I’ll see you all soon when the fall schedule launches.

Potions class at Halloween Art camp was off the hook!
To make your own:
Get a cool jar.
Pour in some liquified snail jelly (vinegar).
One squirt of blood or pixie juice (food coloring or liquid watercolors)
One squirt of frog spawn (dishwashing liquid)
To that, scoop in powdered unicorn horn (baking soda) and sprinkle fairy dust (glitter).
act real spooky, cackle like a witch or mad scientist or a mad scientist witch. Sprinkle that fairy dust over everything.
The end.
I love Halloween in August.

Attempting to teach myself how to draw caricatures that don’t look possessed, crazy, or like something from a freaky 1980s front and profile fade out portrait for a TOP SECRET PROJECT so don’t ask because it’s all hush hush. 😜😉 plus, Nailed It! on the laptop because people failing but going for it anyway inspires me and is basically how I approach everything.

Scenes from week 7 of summer art camp 2020. Considering I wasn’t sure we would hold ANY art camps, this summer has been awesome! I’m tired, but next week is Halloween themed and as you probably know by now- my favorite holiday so I’m pulling out all the stops and doing this thing right!
All the thanks to all of you who trusted me and my yard to provide a safe space to create for your kids. It means the world to me to be able to do this thing that I love, and the support of my art families makes that possible. 🥰🌈🖤

I love the work of Katie Daisy, so today’s workshop was inspired by her art! She is an amazing illustrator. I particularly love the simple and free way she lays down color. When I came across her mixed media photos, I knew my art kids would enjoy the process. This was a quick workshop, and I feel hours more could be spent just getting lost in the process of laying down paint over photos—it was so relaxing and kids really respond to that. Plus, there was the added bonus of beginning with a very not-blank canvas as an ice breaker for the kids.
.
Thanks to all who came out today! Perhaps this idea will be expanded to incude creating and using our own original photography. Look for it!🌻🌻🌿🌿🌸🌺

Did you know you can create different shades of dye using red cabbage? We made our own natural dye potions using a teensy bit of science (changing ph levels by adding vinegar or baking soda) and a bunch of magic to dye our yarn in preparation for tomorrow’s project. A little smelly, but really amazing!

Sharpie Art Workshop had a special guest today...my oldest son! It’s been so long since I had him in an art class. I usually can’t get him to stop playing in the neighborhood long enough to sit still, but today he must have been feeling the love because he showed up! It gave me flashbacks to 2015, back when he was 5 and attending EVERY class I held in the early days of Art With Marissa. He and his little friends were a ragtag of enthusiastic art makers. Fast forward and here’s my huge nearly 10 year old, right by my side, still making stuff. 🥰🥰

It started off so innocently, then our marble art break turned into a weird, social distanced version of a shaving cream war in which twin brothers went full out Wrestlemania and everyone else just hit themselves on the head with their own shaving cream. 😂🤪

Our Story

Art With Marissa started in California in 2015, when, after a year of volunteer teaching art to my then 5 year old son’s school, parents requested I continue with some summer art camps so their children wouldn’t miss too much of the good stuff. Word got around, and before I knew it, Art With Marissa was born. Offering small group art classes using quality materials and focusing on individual expression, Art With Marissa is special in that here, students are free to explore their own artistic minds, and never coaxed into copying art like robots. Classes are available to all ages from toddlers through to adults. Check us out!
