Welcome back to our new series: “Meet the Churchills.” One of the most fascinating political figures of the late 19th century was Winston’s own father, Lord Randolph Spencer Churchill. As the son of a Duke, he grew up in Blenheim Palace. Educated at Eton and Oxford, he later married a beautiful New Yorker, Jennie Jerome. Filled with ambition, he was elected to Parliament as a young man, thanks in part to his dazzling oratory. He even rose to “Chancellor of the Exchequer,” second only to the Prime Minister. He championed “Tory Democracy,” seeking social and economic reforms. Once, during a high stakes showdown with the PM, he threatened to resign. The PM accepted, ruining Randolph politically. Tragically, he died in middle age. Despite having been an imperfect father, Winston idolized him, and missed him dearly. “All my dreams of comradeship with him, of entering Parliament at his side and in his support, were ended” he said. “There remained for me only to pursue his aims and vindicate his memory.” Some say Winston’s desire to honor his father’s memory drove him to greatness. There are films and books on Lord Randolph’s life, but the finest was by Winston himself. Lord Randolph’s bust is still on display in Parliament, a poignant reminder of this remarkable man, so admired by his devoted son.

Welcome to our new series: “Meet the Churchills.” Did you know Winston’s mother was a truly remarkable figure? It may surprise you to learn that Jennie Jerome was born in New York. She grew up to be an impressive young woman. She was a gifted pianist, having been tutored by a friend of Chopin. Her beauty and charm soon brought her great renown. One day, at a sailing regatta in the British Isles, she met Randolph Churchill, the dashing son of a Duke. Three days later, they were engaged. Once married, Lord and Lady Randolph welcomed Winston into the world, unexpectedly, during a ball at the Duke’s palace. Churchill would later joke “Although present on the occasion, I have no clear recollection of the events leading up to it.” Jennie would be known for her wartime philanthropy, her political savvy, and her crucial role in launching Winston’s career. Despite her flaws, he adored her. “She shone for me like the evening star” he said. After she died, he felt her loss deeply. When he spoke to the U.S. Congress, he invoked her memory. “I wish indeed that my mother, whose memory I cherish across the veil of years, could’ve been here to see.” For all she meant to him, she surely deserves to be remembered.

Does this look like someone who gets easily intimidated? If anyone tries to rattle you this week, remember Churchill. Like all true heroes, his strength came from within. This was taken in 1940, when bombs rained down on London. Does he looked defeated to you? When troubles come, stand fast...Be like Churchill.
