Here are some highlights of my Plein Air painting adventures this summer, from Gloucester Va. to Easton Md. and then Ocean city Md. The weather and elements were challenging from storms, heat, downpours , wildfire smoke, the worst of all the biting flies. Never a dull moment but always a fun adventure! Next up is Fresh from the Outer Banks in September. I can’t wait!
Here you can see I block in with burnt sienna creating a glow and value study from the start using my favorite Grand Prix Silver Brush filberts numbers 2 and 4. They’re sturdy for putting down paint and soft for good edge control. Perfect for Plein air! Visit Silverbrush.com to see some more of my recommendations for painting en Plein Air

Apparently, all I had to do was leave the country to remember that there’s a whole world outside my studio.

This trip to Niagara has me looking at my art a little differently. I don’t want every painting to feel like I sat down and decided, “Alright, time to make ART.” I want it to come from actually living my life.

I think the more I open myself up to those experiences, the more interesting the work becomes. So I’m going to keep traveling, keep painting, and see what happens when I let the two overlap a little more.

Follow along. I have a feeling the next painting is going to come from somewhere I probably shouldn’t have brought a watercolor palette.

Huge thanks to the companies that continue to make supplies that can withstand the elements and/or attitude needed.

Plein air painting gets a lot easier when you stop trying to make the painting perfect and start focusing on the scene.

3 things that help me:

1. Breathe. Slow down and actually look before you start painting.
2. Put the phone away. Give yourself a few minutes where the only thing you’re focused on is what’s happening in front of you.
3. Paint what caught your attention. Don’t worry about capturing everything. Find the light, color, shape, or moment that made you stop and paint it.

Nature already gave you the subject. Your job is to pay attention.

Follow along for more painting tips, and share this with an artist who needs to hear it. 🎨

I’ve been thinking about creativity a little…
Ok maybe a lot.

Maybe art isn’t supposed to control your life. Maybe your life is supposed to control your art.

Travel has a funny way of reminding me of that. You leave your normal routine and see something you’ve never seen before, get lost.

Then magically you have something to paint.
Not because you sat down and tried to “make content.”
Because you lived.

Sometimes we get so focused on being artists that we forget to actually be alive. We measure our days by what we created instead of what we experienced. Let life give you something worth painting.

That might be a better creative life.

If you’re trying to build a creative life of your own, follow along. And if this hit you at the right time, share it with another artist who might need to hear it.
