Every painting begins with a sketch.

What starts as a few lines on paper eventually becomes a finished work filled with light, atmosphere, and detail. In this video, watch as Curtis' original sketch transforms into "'Īao Valley" (1995).

This painting began as a commission. Curtis arrived at ʻĪao Valley determined to paint something other than the famous ʻĪao Needle, but after only an hour, he realized that would be impossible. "The Needle is relentlessly compelling," he said.

Did you know that Curtis has handbuilt two yoga decks on The Curtis Wilson Cost Gallery grounds?

Available to airbnb guests staying on the property, these peaceful spaces offer serene places to practice yoga or just enjoy being in the garden. One of them is nestled under a koa tree with a sunset view (pictured here) and another is in a forest of 'ōhi'a lehua. The Cost family has been planting native Hawaiian trees to create more habitat for native Hawaiian birds and these decks are special places to enjoy the beauty of nature.
